Christ came from God as a messenger,

But the least rational of mankind refused him.

People saw a noble human being and claimed,

In their ignorance, that God dwelt within him.

And a faction did not believe him, and multiplied

False and slanderous talk about him.

Neither the exaggerator nor the detractor spoke of him

    Truthfully, whether condemning or vindicating.

It was as though Christ came to them

So that they might deny the Torah and the Gospel.

Marvel, then, at his people, who turned

Their declaration of their God's purity into his torment.

When God wills to try a community

And leads them astray, they see ugliness as beauty.

They honored him falsely; then he was robbed

By his enemies, falsely, of that honor.

They divided the matter of belief among themselves

Into sects; do you not see its knot undone?

He is Adam's equal in merit, except that he

Was not given completion at the moment of the breathing.

Have you heard that God, out of need,

    Consumes drink and food,

And sleeps from weariness and prays to his Lord,

And seeks a resting place from the midday heat,

And suffers pain which he could not

Ward off from himself or turn elsewhere?

Would that I knew, when he died as they claim,

Who undertook to govern in his stead!

    Did this universe govern itself

After him, or choose to cease functioning?

Reward the Jews well for crucifying him, and do not

Disgrace Judas, who took the bribe.

They claimed that God redeemed his servants with himself,

And I see that he was both killer and killed.

Can a people be in Hell while our Lord chooses

From among them one he speaks to and an intimate friend?

And if you suppose that Jesus is your Lord,

Was he not offered up for your redemption?

I hold too exalted a spirit through which the dead arose

To be seen slain at the hands of the Jews.

Leave the tale of his crucifixion, and take

From your books what agrees with the revelation.

    أَفَتَجْعَلُونَ دَلِيلَهُ مَدْخُولا

    The Psalms testified to his protection and deliverance;

Will you deem their evidence defective?

Can one whom God protected be abandoned,

Or one whose victory was proclaimed be forsaken?

May one who declares his God transcendent say,

'Glory to the killer of himself'—that I too might say it?

Or, 'Exalted is he for whose head the Jews, as you claim,

Made a crown of thorn-tree spines,'

And who went carrying his cross, submitting

To death, his hands bound, humiliated?

How long must I rebuke you, while you feel no shame

    At hearing reproach and humiliation?

The Christians went astray concerning Christ and swore

They would find no path to right guidance.

They made three into one; had they been guided,

They would not have made a large number small.

They worshipped a god existing from a god,

Possessing form, by which they went astray, and prime matter.

The Christians and Jews went astray; do not be

Led by them along the paths of guidance.

Those asserting the Trinity are people who sanctioned

What contradicts transmitted teaching and reason.

    The calf-worshippers, beguiled by it,

Wished to make the messengers into calves.

When good tidings came to them, they denied them

Following their souls' desires, and were utterly slaughtered.

For the Jews it is enough that they likened

Their object of worship to his servants.

And that Israel wrestled with his Lord

And threw him down—thanks to Israel!

And that they carried him in a tent

When they resolved to journey toward al-Sham.

And that they heard their God's speech,

Though their way is to hear what is transmitted.

And that they sounded, so their Lord might hear,

Trumpets and drums for him in war.

And that the Lord of the worlds changed his mind

About creating Adam—what an imputation of ignorance!

And changed his mind about Noah's people, and turned back

In sorrow, biting his fingertips, bewildered.

And that Abraham tried to have him eat

Bread, and sought to wash his foot.

And that the wealth of other peoples was made lawful

For them through usury, betrayal, and embezzlement.

And that they did not leave their land,

As though they counted departure as arrival.

As for their tales about the prophets, do not ask

About them; leave their covering drawn.

They did not desist from slandering David, nor

Lot; what, then, of their slander of Reuben?

And to Jacob they ascribed, concerning his children,

A dreadful account of foul deeds.

And to Christ and his mother—suffice it that she was

A truthful woman who bore him, and a virgin.

And upon him who hung upon the cross, as they claim,

A curse guaranteed to return upon themselves.

They wronged Aaron through the calf

Whose fashioning they falsely attributed to him.

    And that Moses fashioned images

With which his prohibition could not reasonably be reconciled.

They accepted God's wrath against him; may

God's wrath not pass beyond his misguided enemy.

And that magic could not overcome a sign

Of his, nor could that sign annul it.

And that whenever he displayed a sign to them,

They displayed its like to him through illusion,

Except the gnats; and the one defying

His God remains vanquished by a gnat.

They accepted that Moses uttered obscenities

With which his testament ended its chapters.

They transmitted obscenities from God's interlocutor; never

Were such things transmitted from one like him.

I think they disobeyed him, so there hastened

    Upon them punishment through obscenity.

Their men complained of what issued from its hem,

And their women of husbands other than their own.

Accursed are those who judged the path of Muhammad

And those believing in him the most misguided path.

Sons of vipers! Do you not see that they

Find the antidote to poisons deadly?

Since leaving the calf by which they were beguiled,

They wished to make the prophets into calves.

Whenever a human being came to them, they denied him

Following their souls' desires, and were utterly slaughtered.

They emptied God's Book of its ordinances

Out of hostility, though it had been full and inhabited.

They made what it forbade lawful, and guidance

Into error, and severed what piety had joined.

What they squandered of its excellence prompted them

To fill it with superfluous talk.

They concealed worship and resurrection, and paid no heed

To truth, whether immediate or deferred.

How strange they are! The Sabbath is a sale to them

Whose buyers found no release from the bargain.

Why did they not disobey Joshua on the Sabbath, when he went

Calling troops and horses to battle?

Or oppose Aaron in slaughtering and in

Kneading on it, from which he showed no retreat?

Or join Christ with those two and permit

Prohibition in both cases, and permission?

Or acknowledge the abrogation which, in their books,

Was explicitly stated by Isaiah and Joel?

Did they not see the ruling of the Old Covenant abrogating

The ordinances of the earliest messengers' books?

Do the unbelievers disdain to correct

A fabricated saying attributed to the best of mankind?

May their milk never flow! Their words

Leave the earth wet with my tears.

It is as though I had found the eye of one bereaved,

Bereft and aching, breaking into lamentation.

They entertained suspicions about their Lord and his messengers,

And assailed women and men with abuse.

If they diminish his due with a false measure,

I shall surely give them repayment in full measure.

It is an injustice that their falsehood be answered

By my truth, for we are not alike in speech.

    أتَرَى الطَّبِيبَ غَدَا يَزورُ عَلِيلا

    Had they been truthful, no messengers would have come to them;

Do you see the physician going to visit the sick?

If they deny the Prophet's excellence, they merely

Draw curtains over the light of day.

God is greatest! The religion of Muhammad

And his Book are stronger and more upright in speech.

And its perfection refused to let it set.

Gathered branches and roots for mankind.

    طَلَعَ النَّهارُ فأَطْفِئُوا القِنْدِيلا

    Do not mention the earlier books beside it;

Day has dawned, so extinguish the lamp.

Their landmarks have worn away; behold, inquire

Of their effaced traces and ruins.

The Torah will tell you whether it foretold

    Ahmad long ago, or Ishmael.

Every fresh copy called him 'a wild man among people,'

And over all his hands reach highest.

You will discern the sound from the unsound; often

The beloved has recognized the lover's true passion in his wasting.

From among their brethren as a messenger, other than him?

Or are their brethren the sons of Esau, whose

    Birthright was transferred to Israel?

By God, the one intended was not the servant

Of Moses, nor Jesus, nor Samuel.

For no prophet like him will arise for them

From among themselves, even if the prophet were comparable.

And the hearer of what was said of his excellence.

And the firmly rooted mountains of Paran

Through him gained precedence over the world.

Ask the Gospel about him, and beware

Of distortion and alteration of its wording.
