لوْلاكَwere it not for you ماnot غَفَرَforgave الذنوبَthe sins مَدِيحُpraise
Are these praises of mine for you, or glorification?
My praise for you, is it glorification or hymning?
But for you, no praise would have forgiven sins.
Without you, praise would not forgive sins.
حُدِّثْتُI was told أنَّthat مَدَائِحيmy praises فِيabout المصطفىthe Chosen One

I was told that my praises of the Chosen One
I was told that my praises of Mustafa
Are an expiation for me—and the report is sound.
Are atonement for me, and this is true.
أرْبِحْhow great the gain بِمَنْof one who أهْدَىoffered إليهto him ثَنَاءَهُhis praise
إنَّindeed الكريمَthe generous one لَرَابِحٌsurely gaining مَرْبُوحُa source of gain
How great the gain of one who offers him his praise!
Profit through the one whose praise you have guided,
The generous one indeed gains and brings gain.
Indeed the generous profits from the profited.
ياO نَفْسُsoul دُونَكِtake up for yourself مَدْحthe praise of أحْمَدَAhmad إنَّهُindeed it

O soul, take up the praise of Ahmad: it is
O my soul, apart from you is the praise of Ahmad, it is
Musk: its scent and the soul alike become musk-scented.
A perfume whose scent the spirit and soul have clung to.
وَنَصِيبُكِand your share الأوْفَىfullest مِنَof الذِّكْرِremembrance الذيwhich

And your fullest share of that remembrance
Your greatest share of the remembrance whose
From which perfume wafts to its hearers.
Fragrance emanates to its listeners.
إنَّindeed النبيَّthe Prophet محمداًMuhammad مِنْfrom رَبِّهhis Lord
كَرَماًgraciously بكلِّwith every فضيلةٍvirtue مَمْنُوحُendowed
Indeed, the Prophet Muhammad is, by his Lord,
Indeed the Prophet Muhammad was from his Lord
Graciously endowed with every virtue.
Generously endowed with every virtue.
اللَّهُGod فَضَّلَهُfavored him وَرَجَّحَand elevated قَدْرَهُhis rank
فَلْيَهْنِهِso may it gladden him التَّفْضيلُdistinction وَالتَّرْجِيحُand preeminence
God favored him and elevated his rank;
God favored him and made great his worth,
So may distinction and preeminence bring him joy.
So excellence and preference become him.
إنْif جاءَhe came بعْدَafter المُرسلينَthe messengers فَفَضْلُهُyet his excellence
مِنْfrom بعدِهafter him جاءَcame المَسيحُthe Messiah وَنُوحُand Noah
Though he came after the messengers, in excellence
If he came after the messengers, his superiority
The Messiah and Noah came after him.
After him came Christ and Noah.
جاؤُواthey came بِوَحْيهِمُwith their revelation وَجاءَand he came بِوَحْيِهِwith his revelation
فكأنَّهso he seems like بينamong الكواكبِthe stars يُوحُYuh, the sun
They came with their revelation, and he came with his,
They came with their revelation and he came with his revelation
So he was like Yuh—the sun—among the stars.
As if he were a bright star amongst the stars.
أنّىhow يُكَيِّفُهاcharacterize it امرؤٌa person وَيَحُدُّهاand delimit it

How could anyone characterize it and define its limits
How can a man limit it and define it
In words, when it is the soul of this existence?
With words when it is the spirit of existence itself?
رَدتْrejected شهادَتَهُhis testimony أناسٌsome people ماnot لهمْthey have

Some people rejected his testimony, though they had
Some people rejected his testimony though they had
No grounds in it to impugn or discredit him.
No criticism or rebuke against it.
ولقدْand indeed أتىhe came بالبيّناتِwith clear proofs صَحِيحَةsound

لوif only أنَّthat ناظِرَthe sight of مَنْwhoever عصاهُdisobeyed him صحيحُsound
He indeed brought sound, clear proofs—
He certainly brought clear proofs
If only the sight of those who disobeyed him were sound.
Had the observer of those who disobeyed been sound.
عَرَفُوهُthey knew him مَعْرِفَةَknowledge of اليَقِينِcertainty وأنْكَرُواand they denied
إنَّindeed الشَّقِيَّthe wretched one إلىtoward الشقاءwretchedness جَموحُheadlong
They knew him with certain knowledge, yet denied him;
They knew him with the recognition of certainty yet denied,
Indeed, the wretched one rushes headlong toward wretchedness.
Indeed the wretched are impetuous to misery.
فأَبَادَso he destroyed مَنْwhoever أبْدَىdisplayed مُخَالَفَةopposition لهُto him

فالسَّيْفُso the sword مِنْfrom تَعَبِthe toil of الخِلافِopposition قَرِيحُsore
So he destroyed whoever openly opposed him;
So he destroyed those who showed defiance to him
So the sword is sore from the toil of opposition.
For the sword from the hardship of dissent is a relief.
وَجَلاand he dispelled ظلامَthe darkness of الظُّلْمِinjustice لَمَّاwhen أوْمَضَتْflashed

وَمَضَتْand passed لديْهbefore him صحائفٌpages وَصَفيحُand sword-blades
And he dispelled injustice's darkness as they flashed
The darkness of injustice receded when
And passed before him—pages and sword-blades.
Parchments and sheets flowed to him.

نُورٌlight مُفاضٌpoured forth أوْor دَمٌblood مَسْفُوحُspilled
Two things alone dispel misguidance:
Two things dispel misguidance apart from them:
Light poured forth, or blood poured out.
An outpouring light or spilled blood.
عَجَباًhow strange لَهُمof them لِمwhy يُنْكِرُونَthey deny نُبُوَّةًa prophethood

How strange of them! Why deny a prophethood
Strange that they deny prophecy
Established before a spirit was breathed into Adam?
Though Adam's spirit was not yet breathed.

Why have I busied myself rebuking them? I am like
Why should I busy myself with rebuking them as though I
A night visitor barked at among the factions.
Were a fault-finder amongst the sects?

Do not weary, by mentioning them, a heart that has come
Do not fatigue a heart tomorrow with mention of them
To find relief in remembering Muhammad.
And find solace for it in mentioning Muhammad.

And spread the Prophet's sayings, for everything
Spread the accounts of the Prophet for all you
You relate about the Beloved is beautiful.
Relay of the news of the Beloved is beautiful.

And recount his virtues, whose words
And mention his virtues whose expressions
Neither space nor the Tablet can contain.
The heavens and tablets fell short of containing.

لِمُحَمَّدٍfor Muhammad يَغْدُوhe goes in the morning بهاwith it وَيَرُوحُand goes in the evening
Are you amazed that the cloud became a sign
Are you astonished that the cloud became a sign
For Muhammad, as he goes with it morning and evening?
For Muhammad, going early and returning?

Or that sarh-trees came obediently to him,
Or that horses came to him obediently
As though grazing herds had come to the meadows?
As if orchards came to meadows?

And at flowing water springing in a palm,
And for the spring whose aid brought relief
Where pebbles moved and uttered glorification?
The pebbles flowed to it praising.

Or that a dry trunk longed for him,
Or that a withered trunk inclined
Yearning, complaining of its grief and wailing,
Longingly, complaining of its affliction and grieving,

Until the Prophet drew near to it and whoever drew near to him
Him has anguish leave his heart.
Melancholy distanced from his heart?

And that the arm spoke to him - how then could it not
Confide its secret to him and disclose it?
Unburden its secret and confide to him?

And that the blind could see, and the stick turned
Into a sword, and the dead live while lying prone?
Into a sword, and the dead lived though prone?

And that people gained succor through him though they had complained
Of drought that left the face of the earth frowning?
Of a place on the earth that had become barren for them?

And that a watering-place should overflow for him and turn sweet,
And that a spring overflowed fresh water for him
Though its drawn water had been bitter?
Though its water had once been bitter and foul?

What coolness for thirsty livers, touched by
O coolness for parched livers which
Water mixed with Muhammad's saliva!
The meadow of Muhammad's illumination quenched!

May God send blessings upon him, indeed His blessings
Is rain that dispels the maladies of sins.
Are rain dispelling the illnesses of sins.

God took him bodily on the night journey, as though he were
He traveled by night with his body so it was as if
A warrior, resolute upon al-Buraq's back.
He were a hero riding Al-Buraq with haste.

And he drew near, where no hopeful hand could stretch
He drew near so no hopeful hand stretched
In longing, nor any gaze aspire toward him.
Greedily, no eye looked to Him aspiringly,

Until God revealed to him what
He revealed, and the time came to turn back,
He revealed, and the time to return drew near.

Al-Buraq returned with him, his garment of skin
Al-Buraq returned with him, and his garment of leather
Sprinkled at night with the water of his modesty.
Was perfumed that night with his bashfulness.

So leave the devils of those who disbelieve in him
So leave the devils who disbelieved in him
To whisper to them whatever they may whisper.
Suggesting to them whatever they may suggest.

By God, the doubts raised in their words
By God, their alleged ambiguities about him
Are only like the twitching of a slaughtered creature.
Are but as the convulsions of the slaughtered.

How far apart a body whose movements are regulated
What comparison between a body whose movements
By a soul, and a stick swayed by the wind!
Are animated by a spirit, and wood the wind sways?

Without the Prophet Muhammad and his teachings,
The Prophet Muhammad and his knowledge -
Judgments of good and evil would not be known.
Perfection and imperfections were not yet recognized.

God bound all affairs through him, so there was
God entrusted affairs to him so none but him
No withholding or releasing for anyone else.
Could undertake or relinquish.

ليُحَرِّمُواso they might forbid وَيُحَلِّلُواand make lawful وَيُبِيحُواand permit
Those who made gods of their scholars went astray,
Those who deified their rabbis went astray
To let them forbid, make lawful, and permit.
To prohibit, permit, and legitimize.

O community of the Chosen One, you have been spared
O chosen nation, you have been compensated
What afflicted them; the afflicted are exposed.
For what you suffered, and the afflicted are disgraced.

So rejoice in God's purchase and your sale
So receive good tidings of God's trade with you
To Him, for the balance of fulfillment is weighty.
In it the scale of loyalty is weighty.

And take, from guidance, the price of your souls;
And make up for the price of your souls through guidance
For the price of souls from guidance is profitable.
For through guidance the price of souls profits.

Generosity, whose door of giving is open!

We call on you in poverty and need of you,
We call on You in poverty and need,
And the scope of your bounty is vast for supplicants.
And Your favor is ample to pardon transgressors.

So graciously pardon the sinful servant;
So pardon the sinful servant out of generosity,
The generous one is forgiving toward the wrongdoer.
The generous pardons the sinner.

And accept, O Messenger of God, the excuse of one who falls short;
Accept the Messenger of God's apology for the deficient,
He, if you accept, is praised for praising you.
He through Your praise of the praised reaches sufficiency.

And swimming in every sea of your bounty.
In every sea of Your bounty.

He finds rest if the Sanctuary and its stones are mentioned,
And its arak-trees, its thumam-grass, and wormwood,
And seeing You, and Your bush, and creeper.

Yearning for a safe sanctuary in Taybah;
Yearning for a holy precinct, blessed and secure,
Thereby a garden and a tomb became fragrant.
Its meadow and tomb perfumed through that.
إنيindeed I لأرْجُوsurely hope أنْthat تَقَرَّmay be soothed بِقُرْبِهِby nearness to him
عَيْنيmy eye ويُؤْسَىand be healed قَلْبِيَmy heart المَجْرُوحُwounded
I surely hope that, through nearness to him,
I hope that through its nearness
My eye will find joy and my wounded heart be healed.
My eye will find rest, and my wounded heart consoled.
فاكْحَلْso anoint with kohl بِطيْفٍwith a dream-vision منهof him طَرْفاًan eye جَفْنُهits eyelid
بِدُمُوعِهِwith its tears حتىuntil يَرَاهُit sees him قَرِيحُsore
So use a vision of him as kohl for an eye whose lid
So delight an eye whose lids
Is sore with its tears until it sees him.
Have been stained with its tears until the watcher sees.
فلقدْfor indeed حَبانيbestowed on me اللَّهُGod فيكَfor you مَحَبَّةًlove

For God has indeed bestowed on me love for you;
God has granted me a love for you in which
My heart is stingy with it toward all but you.
My heart is miserly to all but you.

May His blessing and peace upon you endure,
May His prayers and peace upon you last,
Their morning draught following their evening draught upon you,
Their ardor accompanied at your side by the zealous.
ماas long as افْتَرَّsmiled ثغْرٌa mouth للأَزاهِرِof the flowers أَشْنَبfresh and fine-toothed
وانْهَلَّand poured down دَمْعٌtears للسَّحَابِof the clouds سَفُوحُfreely flowing
As long as the flowers' fresh, fine-toothed mouth smiles,
No blooming flowers smile, no pouring clouds weep,
And the clouds' freely flowing tears pour down.
As long as the horizons of meadows burst forth.
