And surely ask Habakkuk, who explicitly declared his name

and his description; he suffices as one to consult.

When he conveyed the plain statement mentioning him

to the listeners, he conveyed it well.

Muhammad's arrows were sated through his bows,

and whoever they challenged was vanquished by them.

to dispel a deceiver's pretext and remove it.

And assail the foes with glad tidings from Jeremiah,

when the arrows of his quiver restrained the sorely stricken.

and made him a messenger to the peoples.

And I made my sanctification, shortly before his existence,

a promise binding upon me, fulfilled like his sending.'

time's gray hairs do not seek to let fade.

A sanctuary forbidden to the bearing of arms,

as though it waters swords with notches.

Through its sanctity's inviolability, you imagine the foes

unarmed, though clad in weapons, and faltering.

referring you to the adversary for proof.

When you have attained guidance through his Book,

seek thereafter no acquisition of another.

A Reminder through which you ascend to lofty ranks,

so you think the bearer of its verses is himself borne.

It leaves the eloquent challenger tongue-tied

in his speech, and the man of reason deranged.

at a superior calling an inferior to testify.

to submit, needy before him and humbled.

    in excellence, nor surpass it.

That is he who raised guidance in his right hand

as a banner, and unsheathed a polished, cutting sword.

made unavenged blood its means of purification?

And with his sword he keeps sending to Hell,

from those who disobeyed, slain man after slain man.

with his blade, and given Azrael rest.'

minds might almost mistake for wine.

He whose character is the Qur'an—his praise is too exalted

for talk of him to become wearisome.

to reach by kissing the honeyed watering-place?

yet whose visitor only grows more thirsty.

in which you found those following the elephant,

gray-haired elders, youths, and middle-aged men alike.

peace as war, and the helper as a deserter.

and appointed those clear proofs as upright witnesses.

You kept on ceaselessly reciting a verse

among them, and severing a neck with the sword.

habit master your nature and change it.

A lover never tires of the one he loves.

Would that I were among a company who witnessed battle

with him for a time, and long combat,

so I might defend him with a tongue and a sharp sword,

forever speaking and acting abundantly to please him.

At times with a rhyme whose steadfastness shows you

    death's hand paralyzed away from his honor;

and with a blow whose single stroke makes the armored man

    a pair, felled as death wished;

and with a thrust that bares the spearhead, showing

to your eye, in the armored warrior, an eye darkened with kohl.

In a battlefield that veils men's glances, so that no

eye sees there except leaning spears.

There I sipped death's cool, sweet mouth

and kissed the smooth cheek of the Mashrafi sword.

The horses swim in blood, while guarding against

pools of gore are the warriors' hands.

So rejoice when iron sings; the finest thing

heard by one yearning for combat is its ringing clang.

By God, the heart is turned from him by what turned

Amir and Salul: fear of death.

Would a passionate lover begrudge him his wealth and life,

when he sees losing them as gaining them?

I shall surely cut the ropes of my procrastination, which

kept others from reaching his sanctuary.

For his sake I shall surely deny the eye its sleep,

    and make sleeplessness its companion.

For his sake I shall shoot through mountain passes on lean mounts,

like arrows in speed and bows in thinness.

On every mount with bleeding flanks, whose pace I increased

to a brisk trot whenever I tasked her with slowing.

She traveled, her foreleg measuring the desert's roof,

as though she measured a mile with a mile.

Until they show you a letter from hard flint—

    her hooves—vowel-marked in their blood.

As though she struck rock with rock its equal

from a smiling mouth, the two matching each other in killing.

She cut the ropes of distance when she set to work,

out of longing for Taybah, a sinewy foreleg.

Until in Taybah I reunite the company that

wore out the swift, sturdy she-camel on the journey there.

And ease from the weariness of sins a conscience

    weighed down with burdens of transgression;

and a heart rejoice in pardon that has long remained

    fettered by my prolonged wrongdoing;

and I return endowed with immense grace—

a gift of grace from him is gift enough for me.

And when matters become difficult, I

hope for their easing through Muhammad.

O Lord, grant us to the Prophet, and forgive us

what our souls have enticed us to do.

And conceal what You know of us, for none could bear—

not one of us—the shame of a sin.

And have compassion on weak creation when it sees

the terror of the Return and displays its dread.

A day when minds go astray, and the

eyes stare fixedly in fear and bewilderment.

The guilty conceal remorse on that day

at times, and at times give voice to wailing.

The seeker of deliverance keeps turning

his gaze among the intercessors, sweeping it around,

so that his soul may gain, from Resurrection's thirst,

a quenching draught, and from the Blaze's heat, a place to rest.

And grant us, O God, Muhammad's standing

as a forerunner through which You bring us what we hope for.

Through him turn Hell's torment away from us

in generosity, and restrain its kindled blaze.

And make Your blessings fall in a constant shower,

never faltering before they reach his tomb,

as long as the breeze shakes the boughs, and there echoes

a gray dove's cooing on an arak branch.
