Leave me to weep after the neighbors of Thahmad,

and recent acquaintances in what remains of my old abode,

and with burning longing, renewed since their departure.

And why should I not weep, when they have resolved to depart,

on the morning we parted, some lowland-bound and others upland-bound?

For they did not bid me farewell when their departure grew earnest,

nor provision me with a traveler's parting glance.

Nor did they pity a heart hovering over the sanctuary,

nor preserve the covenant of a firmly confirmed pledge.

And O you who make me ill in the lowlands—the lowlands of Tihamah—

renew my illness among them, and return to me with my visitors.

and strike the stricken lover at every targeted spot.

and how many bow and prostrate themselves before her.

and ask every reciter to recite poems!’

So I told them, ‘Leave me to my way, for I

go forth at evening and at dawn under passion's rule.’

No lightning at Abraq Ramah stirred my longing,

nor the melodies of singing doves,

nor breezes of wind scattering pearls

of dew from flowers like pearls set in rows.

Rather, the blessed face stirred my longing, through which

the light of the Truth shone forth in every scene.

is how you close and begin your gracious remembrance.

and a sword against enemies that is never sheathed,

and a foaming sea of his gifts quenches thirst.

and you are a light for us; through you people find guidance.

before which my patience falters and my fortitude fades.

that shatter firm mountains; so be measured and gentle.

And finally, God's blessing, and then His peace,

upon the finest branch grown tall from the noblest stock:

Muhammad, lofty in glory, and his family,

defenders of the faith's frontiers against every heretic.
