life has not pleased me, nor has any drink tasted sweet.
No life has been good for me, no drink has been sweet.

And I weep, so the setting caravan weeps for me.

On the morning of battle, among them were lions, fierce lions,
Every tall knight will meet them undaunted,
clothed in interlinked shirts of iron.
Though the bloom of youth be shorn and spent;
يَخوضونthey plunge into بحراa sea دونهlesser than it البحرthe sea منof دمblood
وأمواجهand its waves بيضbright swords وَسمرand dark spears وَشذبand stripped shafts
They plunge into a sea of blood before which the ocean pales;
Laying down his soul amidst the thorns of spears
its waves are bright swords, dark spears, and stripped shafts.
And falling into the torrents of death;

Each is far-reaching, storming into battle,
His cloak in battle a coat of mail
radiant and long-lived; whoever confronts him perishes.
Dazzling white like burnished steel;

He lavishes his own life upon the thorns of spears,
God's peace upon them as they paved the way of guidance
and a choice steed gallops with him into death’s tumult.
And East and West bowed to their swords;

His garment in terror is a gleaming coat of mail,
For love of whom base souls were humbled
and a bright, grooved sword of lustrous iron.
By his tremendous awesomeness and revered majesty;

ودانand submitted لهمto them بالسيفthrough the sword شرقeast وَمغربand west
God’s peace upon them, for they smoothed the way of guidance,
An Arabian Prophet pleased and ennobled,
and east and west submitted to them through the sword,
Generous, true to his word, eminent;

for love of him before the force of whose might
To the lord of expansive respect we have turned
and supreme awe Nizar and Ya‘rub were humbled.

A prophet of the Hijaz, well-pleasing, honored,
Pens and deputies correspond
noble, generous, true to his promise, nobly born.
To achieve an aim that strikes terror;

همومcares لَهاthey have فيin ابنthe son of العَواتكthe ‘Awatik مطلبa sought remedy
To the possessor of vast standing we were driven
They stand at the door of the Prophet Muhammad
by cares seeking their answer in the son of the ‘Awatik.
Humbly, fearfully, watching expectantly;
منfrom الحبرthe learned man وَالنيابَتينand the two deputyships تَراسَلَتcame in succession

From the learned man and the two deputyships they came in succession,
And alight in the cradle of munificence and satisfaction
toward a goal before which terrors must be ridden through.
Before the master from whom munificence flows forth;
فَقامَتso they stood عَلىat بابthe door of النَبيthe Prophet محمدMuhammad
مَقامthe stance of ذَليلa humbled one خائفfearful يترقبwatching anxiously
So they stood at the door of the Prophet Muhammad,
In the green square and the noble shrine
as one humbled and fearful, watching anxiously.
That almost bids welcome to the Prophet's visitors;
وَحَطَتand settled ببحبوحin the heart of المَكارِمgenerosity وَالرضاand favor

They settled in the heart of generosity and favor,
Peace upon that beloved, for I pine for him
with a master from whom noble gifts are bestowed,
From afar, yearning and enraptured;
عَلىon الساحَةthe courtyard الخَضراءgreen وَالمشهدand the shrine الَّذيwhich

on the green courtyard and at the shrine that
O Messenger of God, may a glance of mercy
seems ready to welcome the Prophet’s visitors.
Fall upon us, if no prayer is refused;
سَلامpeace عَلىupon ذاكَthat الحَبيبBeloved فاننيfor I

Peace upon that Beloved, for I,
You are our protector against a hostile time
despite my distance, yearn for him and am stirred.
That denies the good and plunders the faith;
عَسىmay there be ياO رَسولMessenger of اللَهGod نظرةa glance of رحمةmercy
اليناtoward us وَالاor else دعوةa prayer ليسnot تحجبbarred
May there be, O Messenger of God, a merciful glance
May your name, my master, prevail over
toward us—or else a prayer that is not barred.
Its clinging to the creed of disobedience and grey hairs;
فأَنتَfor you حماناare our refuge مِنزَمانagainst an age معاندhostile
بهin it ينكرis denied المَعروفgoodness والدينand faith يسلبis stripped away
You are our refuge against a hostile age
Take the ink-holder's hand and intercede for him and me
in which goodness is denied and faith is stripped away.
For by God, I am a sinner and he a sinner;
سميكyour namesake ياO مَولايطالmy master; has lasted long عكوفيهhis lingering (uncertain form)
عَلىat كعبةthe Kaaba of العصيانdisobedience وَالرأسwhile the head أَشيَبis gray-haired
Your namesake, my master, has lingered long
Arise O Messenger of God for me and my companion
at the Kaaba of disobedience, though his head is gray.
And say: such heirs are unworthy;
فَخَدso take (apparently فخذ) بيدby the hand of المقرىal-Muqri واشفعand intercede لهfor him وَليand for me
فَوso, by اللَهGod انيI am مذنبa sinner وَهوَand he is مذنبa sinner
So take al-Muqri by the hand and intercede for him and me;
Our burdens and sins have grown
by God, I am a sinner, and he is a sinner.
And we have done nothing to deserve favor;
وَقمand stand ياO رَسولMessenger of اللَهGod بيfor me وَبصاحبيand for my companion
وَقلand say ذاthis one كَهَذاlike this one الاخلافfailure to fulfill (unclear here) مرتبarranged
Stand up for me and my companion, O Messenger of God,
Time has cut off the means between us
and say, ‘This one is like that one’—[the concluding phrase is unclear].
But we turn for refuge to you;
فَقَدfor indeed عظمتhave grown immense أَوزارناour burdens وَذنوبناand our sins
وَلَمand not نأتwe have done شيأanything لِلكَرامةfor honor يوجبthat merits
Our burdens and our sins have grown immense,
The flood of our trespasses surrounded us and we have
and we have done nothing that merits honor.
No ark but your ship;
وَقطعتand severed الايامthe days أَسبابties بينناbetween us
وَلكنbut اليكمto you يَلجأresorts المتسببthe seeker of a means
The days have severed the ties between us,
When we decide to visit, your distance
yet to you the seeker of a means resorts.
Holds us back, not resentment or shunning;
أَحاطsurrounded بناus طوفانthe deluge of زلاتناour missteps وَماand not
لناfor us فيهin it الاexcept فلكthe ark of صفكyour pardon (apparently صفحك) مركبa vessel
The deluge of our missteps has surrounded us, and we have
Through you we implore, we insist and promise,
no vessel upon it but the ark of your pardon.
For we have no alternative or refuge but you;
اذاwhenever ماindeed (emphatic) هممناwe intended بالزِيارةto visit عاقناheld us back
بعادكyour distance عناfrom us لاnot الجفاestrangement وَالتجنبand avoidance
Whenever we intend a visit, what bars us is
Say you have forgiven me, my companion and household
your distance from us, not estrangement or avoidance.
When the terrors of Judgment Day loom;
اليكto you توسلناwe pleaded بكthrough you اصفحpardon وجدand be generous وعدand return in kindness
فَماfor there is no منكapart from you بدّلاdoing without (uncertain form) وَلاnor منكfrom you مهربescape
To you we plead through you: pardon, be generous, and return in kindness;
We take shelter and call upon the Muslims
we cannot do without you, nor flee from you.
When each soul is seized for what it earned;
وَقلand say انقامني[he is] of me (unclear text) وَليand mine وَمَعيand with me وَبيand through me
وَعنديand in my presence فاهوالfor the terrors of القيامةResurrection تصعبare grievous
And say, ‘[He is] of me, mine, with me, and through me,
Naught issues from you but a breath of Hashimi mercy
and in my presence’—for the terrors of Resurrection are grievous.
Or overflowing compassion on us;
نَلوذwe seek refuge وَنَدعوand invite المسلمينthe Muslims لظلكمto your shade
اذاwhen أخذis seized الجانيthe wrongdoer بماfor what كانhe used to يكسبearn
We seek refuge and invite the Muslims to your shade
May God bless you whenever a star rises
when the wrongdoer is seized for what he used to earn.
Or sets in the seven heavens;

Nothing from you but a Hashimite breath of grace
Blessings that encompass your Household and Companions
upon us, nothing but mercy branching out.
As long as pages are inscribed;
وَصلىand may He bless عليكyou اللَهGod ماas long as درpoured عارضa rain-cloud
وَماand as long as لاحَshone فيin السبعthe seven الطَرائِقcelestial ways كوكبa star

May God bless you as long as rain-clouds pour,
and stars shine in the seven celestial ways;

a blessing embracing the family and companions always,
a means of attainment through it, as long as pages are written.
