وأيامَand the days of الشبابِyouth ومَنand the one who بِهاin them ليwas mine
The protected grounds remind me of the time of union,
The fever reminds me of the days of union,
And youth's days, and the one who was mine then,
And the days of youth and those dear to me,
وسلمىand Salma والسّلامةَand well-being هواهاher love
ونعمىand Nu'ma والنعيمَand bliss بلاwithout زوالِend
And Salma, whose love was well-being,
Salma and her health that he adored,
And Nu'ma, and bliss without end;
Na'ima and the bliss that knows no end,
وهَصريand my bending غُصنَthe bough of ذابلةِa slender woman of التثنِّيswaying

وقَطْفيand my plucking وردَthe roses of ناضِرِةِone radiant in الجَمالِbeauty
And my bending the bough of a slender, swaying woman,
Hassari a withering branch I would bend,
And my plucking roses from one radiant in beauty,
Qatfi a rose in full bloom I'd tend,
ورَشفيand my sipping حيثُwhere يبتسمُsmile الأقاحيthe daisies
وشَمِّيand my inhaling حيثُwhere تَنْعجنُare kneaded الغَواليprecious perfumes
And my sipping where the daisies smile,
Rashfi where smiles appear on lips that rend,
And my inhaling where precious perfumes are kneaded;
Shammi where hearts in passion apprehend,
وتَركيand my abandoning الزُّهدasceticism فيamid راحٍwine شمولٍheady
ورَفْضيand my rejecting النُّسكَdevotion فيin ريحٍa wind شمالِnorthern
And my forsaking asceticism amid heady wine,
I'd leave ascetism in days that extend,
And my renouncing devotion in a north wind;
Reject devotion when storms northward send,
وحبِّيand my love of شربَdrinking ياقوتٍruby مُذابٍmolten
يَرضُّcrushes المزجُthe mixing فيهِin it حصىpebbles of اللآليpearls
And my love of drinking molten ruby,
Love to sip ruby wine that time can't amend,
In which the mixing crushes pebbles of pearl;
Where pebbles and wine in the mix transcend,
وهزِّيand my swaying العطفَthe flank فيin غَفَلاتِheedless moments of عيشٍlife
وريقِleafy الأيكِthe groves مَمْطورِrain-drenched الظِّلالِthe shade
And my swaying my body in life's heedless moments,
To shake the boughs in heedless life I'd bend,
Leafy in its groves, rain-drenched in its shade.
At noon where palm shade its relief does lend,
فهاso behold أناI منover لُبابِthe prime of العُمرِlife أشجىgrieve
إذاwhenever هجستْstir خواطرُهاthoughts of them بباليin my mind
So here I am, grieving for life's prime,
Now from life's sap I perspire and distend,
Whenever thoughts of those days stir in my mind.
When thoughts ebb my way and cares to me wend,
وأجتلبُand I summon الشجونَsorrows وأينَand where is صَبريmy patience
وأَحتلبُand I milk الشؤونَthe tear-ducts وكيفَand how is حاليmy condition
And I summon sorrows—where is my patience?
I summon regrets, where's my patience friend?
And I milk my tear-ducts—how do I fare?
I stir up sorrows, how's my state to mend?
وتَذويand withers مُهجتيmy heart واشتْفand inspect لَونيmy complexion
وتَدمَىand bleeds مُقلتيmy eye وسَلِand ask اللياليthe nights
And my heart withers—look closely at my complexion;
Melting inside, my color starts to bend,
And my eye bleeds—ask the nights.
My eyelids bloodshot, nights leur havoc rend,
فخَدِّيso my cheek الزعفرانُsaffron ولاand not أًحاشيI make exceptions
ودَمعيand my tears الأرجوانُcrimson ولاand not أُباليI care
So my cheek is saffron; I make no exception,
My cheeks now saffron, but I don't apprehend,
And my tears are crimson; I do not care.
Echoing the rose, dual-colored I pretend,
أُحاكيI resemble الوردَthe rose ذاpossessing الوجهينtwo faces يُحْذىis modeled
معاًtogether فيin الصبغتينِthe two hues علىupon مثاليِmy likeness
I resemble the two-faced rose, modeled
Can the days of union return and time amend?
In both its hues at once upon my likeness.
Can the beloved forget the ways she would offend?
وكيفَand how يُرَدُّcan be restored ليto me ماwhat فاتَhas slipped away منِّيfrom me
وردٌّand the return of الغاَنياتِbeautiful women منَamong المُحالِthe impossible
And how can what has slipped from me be restored to me?
For bankrupts, wishing is all they can extend,
And bringing back the beauties is impossible.
For dreamers, imagining is all they can apprehend,
وماand not للمُفلسينَfor the bankrupt سوىexcept التَمنِّيwishing
وماand not للنّائمينَfor sleepers سِوىexcept الخَيالِdream-visions
And the bankrupt have nothing but wishes,
Poetry within withers, the darkness descend,
And sleepers have nothing but dreams.
Struggling, the meters my heart fragment and rend,
ذَوىhas withered الشّعرُthe hair البنفسجُviolet فيin عِذاريmy sideburns
وزاحَمَهُand crowded it ثَغامُwhite thagham grass الاكتهالmiddle age
The violet hair of my sideburns has withered,
A stitch creeps in, gray hairs first append,
And middle age's white thagham grass crowds it.
Another stitch burns, like embers that impend,
وكدّand wearied تفاوتُthe contrast between الحطّينِthe two streaks (reading uncertain) قَلبيmy heart
وخاطَand sewed عليupon me أثوابَgarments of الخَبالِmadness
And the contrast between the two streaks has wearied my heart,
It fears the flames so does itself defend,
And sewn upon me the garments of madness.
Casting no shadow, it cannot apprehend,
فَخيطٌso a strand دبhas crept بدءُthe onset of الشيبِgray hair فيهِin it
دبيبَthe creeping of النارِfire فيinto طرفِthe tip of الذبالِwicks
One strand: the onset of gray has crept along it,
Dark youth is now illuminated and does amend,
Like fire creeping into the tips of wicks.
Will those days return, their sweet memory I lend,
وآخرُand another فاحمٌjet-black كالفَحمِlike coal جانٍinflicting harm
علىupon جارٍa neighbor بحرِّby the heat of النارِfire صالِscorched
And another, jet-black as coal, inflicts harm
Will absence forget, and beauty time not offend?
Upon a neighbor scorched by the fire's heat.
Those melodies will live, those nights ascend,
يُحاذرُit fears أنْto يصابَbe struck وغيرُand no بدعٍnovelty
لجارِfor the neighbor of النارِfire عدوىthe contagion of الإشتعالِignition
It fears being struck; it is no wonder
Starry-eyed, leisurely, tail long append,
For fire's neighbor to catch the contagion of burning.
Soothes my desperate soul, sharpens my apprehend,
فذيso these are ظلمُthe dark shadows of الشبابِyouth علىupon صَداهاtheir rust
ضياءُthe radiance of الشيبِgray hair حودِثَhas been refreshed بالصقالِby polishing
So these are youth's dark shadows; upon their rust
Inspires my mind to creative thoughts it does bend,
Gray hair's radiance has been refreshed by polishing.
Releases my tongue that was tied in a defend,
تُرىI wonder تلكَthose العهودdays تعودُreturn يوماًone day
وحالand the state of الوصلِunion يلقحُbecomes fertile عنafter حِيالِbarrenness
Will those days, I wonder, return one day,
I excessively praise Abu Ali I commend,
And union's state become fertile after barrenness,
A lion in might, his glory has no end,
وينسَىand forgets البينُseparation عادَتَهُits habit وتَنْجوand escape
منَfrom الأقتابِpack-saddles أسنمةُthe humps of الجِمالِcamels
And separation forget its habit, and escape
A ship in bounty, from his rain all descend,
From pack-saddles the humps of camels,
High his honor, on plentiful wealth depend,
فتُعْمَرُthen are inhabited باللِّوىat al-Liwa تلكَthose المَغانيdwellings
وتَرجعُand return بالحمىin the protected grounds تلكَthose اللياليnights
Then those dwellings at al-Liwa be inhabited again,
Loaning ears to musical tones that attend,
And those nights return in the protected grounds?
His cheek's musk makes rose perfume transcend,
رَخيمُsoft in الدلِّcoquetry مكسالُlanguid in التّهاديswaying
طويلُlong in الذيلِtrailing hem صَرارُcreaking in النِّعالِsandals
Soft in coquetry, languid in his swaying,
His lips' rose with beauty's mark he does amend,
Long of hem, with creaking sandals,
For caravan vast shelter he does extend,
يرقِّقُhe softens طَبعَيmy temperament المأيوسَdespaired عنهُof it
ويشحذُand whets غَرْبَهُits edge بعدَafter الكلالِbluntness
He softens my temperament, once despaired of,
Forbidden, he sanctifies what God did intend,
And whets its edge after it has dulled.
His humility makes his virtues ascend,
فينشطُthen grows eager لاختراعِto invent الشعرِpoetry عقليmy mind
ويَنشطنيand releases me البَيانُeloquence منَfrom العِقالِthe tether
Then my mind quickens to invent poetry,
His eloquence reveals Jesus' wise amend,
And eloquence releases me from my tether.
His lines sieve the right from pretend,
وأطنِبand I speak at length فيin ثناءِpraise of أبيAbu (father of) عليٍّAli
نظامِNizam (order of) الملكal-Mulk (the realm) نَظّامِarranger of المعاليlofty virtues
And I dwell at length on the praise of Abu Ali,
Surpassing arrows that to targets wend,
Nizam al-Mulk, arranger of exalted virtues.
In healing green, men's vision they mend,
فتىًa young man كالليثِlike a lion مَشبوبُfiery in المآتيapproaches
فتىًa young man كالقرمِlike a stallion-camel محذورُfeared in الصِّيالِcharging
A youth like a lion, fiery in his approaches,
Balanced in right, from wrongs they defend,
A youth like a stallion-camel, whose charge is feared.
No flaws but those the perfect cannot apprehend,
وتسخَرand mocks كفُّهُhis hand والبحرُand the sea فيهاin it
بِمَنat those who شامَscan السّحائبَthe clouds للنّوالِfor bounty
And his hand, holding the sea, mocks
Blessings to the Prophet they send,
Those who scan the clouds for bounty.
God's power through them all comprehend,
ويُعلىand raises كعبَهُhis standing عِرضٌhonor مَصونٌprotected
مُعَوَّلُهُits reliance علىupon مالٍwealth مُذالِfreely expended
And an inviolate honor raises his standing,
His pillar stands firm, mountains it does transcend,
Its reliance is on wealth freely expended.
When he sips his wine, ears to music attend,
أعارَhe lent عَواطِلَthe unadorned ones of الآدابِthe literary arts عيناًan eye
تُراعيهاthat watches over them فهُنso they بهِthrough him حَوالِadorned
He lent the unadorned literary arts an eye
A cup in his hand slightly tilted does portend,
To watch over them; through him they are adorned.
A bag in his other, blessings he does extend,
وعطرّand perfumed شعرَthe hair of صدغَيْهاtheir two temples بمِسْكٍwith musk
ونقّطَand dotted وردَthe roses of خدَّيْهاtheir two cheeks بخالِwith a beauty spot
And perfumed the hair at their temples with musk,
If his cheeks light the sun, gazelles apprehend,
And dotted the roses of their cheeks with a beauty spot.
His soul regards fame the best wealth to spend,
وبَوَّءَand lodged وفدَهاtheir delegation كنفاًa shelter رَحيباًspacious
مرودَsought for grazing العُشبِthe grass مَورودَfrequented for drinking الزُّلالِclear water
And lodged their delegation in a spacious refuge,
Casting it to neglect, like birds their eggs defend,
With grass sought for grazing and clear water sought for drinking.
I served you with loyalty that will never end,
حَراماًan inviolable sanctuary مثلَlike بيتِthe House of اللهِGod يَشْدوsings
بسحرٍwith magic فيin مناقِبهِhis virtues حَلالِlawful
A sanctuary like God's House, where one sings
To you I came, not to kin I attend,
With lawful magic in praise of his virtues.
Your meadows of glory from my praises ascend,
يُسفُّbrings low بهِhim تواضُعُهhis humility فتَدْنوso draw near
مَقاطِعُهُhis concluding phrases علىdespite بعدِthe remoteness of المنَالِreach
His humility brings him low, and near draw
Oasis fruits from which all draw and amend,
His concluding phrases, despite their lofty reach.
Many verses before you I extend,
ويُظْهِرُand displays نطقُهُhis speech إعجازَthe miracle of عيسىJesus
بردِّby restoring الروحِthe spirit فيto الرّممِremains البَواليdecayed
And his speech displays the miracle of Jesus,
Yet my place never makes my words offend,
By restoring the spirit to decayed remains.
My art is proof, like Moses I defend,
وأهدافand the targets of الصوابِright judgment مُغَربلاتٌare riddled
بأقلامٍby pens لهُof his مثلlike النِّبالِarrows
And the targets of right judgment are riddled
When I speak truth, imagination does apprehend,
By his pens, like arrows.
Days probed me like steeds ropes do apprehend,
يُفوِّقُهاhe nocks them فلاand so do not تُخطيmiss وتَمضيand drive onward

He nocks them; they never miss, and drive onward
To your door I clung, protected I extend,
With the piercing force of Qa'dabi points on spears.
You raised me high, though low was my descend,

In handwriting the color of antimony, which heals
Live as long as you wish, your enemies apprehend,
The eyes of the sore-eyed when applied as kohl.
Stay as long as you dream, your friends attend,
فمنso of دالٍthe letter dal تُصاغُis shaped علىwith اعتدالٍbalance
ومنand of ذالٍthe letter dhal تصانُis protected عنِfrom ابتِذالِdebasement
Here is a dal, shaped with balance,
Take in your circle of bliss crescent moons that append,
And a dhal, guarded from debasement.

And the eye perceives no flaw in it,
Except the feared evil eye that perfection attracts.
تُساقُis conveyed إلىto النّبيِّthe Prophet بهِthrough it صَلاةٌa blessing

Through it, a blessing is conveyed to the Prophet,
And in it the power of the Lord of Majesty is recognized.

And his pillar stands firm in every crisis
Before which the pillars of mountains tremble.

And he never drinks wine without delight reaching
His ears in the melody of requests.

A cup in his right hand, from which he inclines
Toward rapture, and a purse in his left.

And if the sun of his cheeks flashes,
You would take the sun for a gazelle's eye.

And he forgets his treasures, with a soul
That sees immortal renown as the finest wealth.

He cast them into the open, just as she withdrew
From the eggs—the brooding mother of ostrich chicks.

وأُلْتُand I sought refuge إلىat جَنابِكَyour presence غيرَwithout آلِstinting
O our master, I have served you without flagging,
And sought refuge at your threshold, sparing no effort.

And the gardens of your glory were watered from my praise
By rain pouring down, its waterskin-spouts unbound.

فلمand did not يَخجلfeel shame مَقاميmy standing منat مَقاليmy words

How often have I recited my verse before you,
And my standing never blushed at my speech.

And in my craft I have Moses' proof,
While others offer counterfeit illusion.

And how often the hand of days has pawed at me,
Like horses' forelegs when they glimpse the feedbags.

So I sought refuge at the door of your house, asking protection,
My path clear, my range wide.

And with you I gained elevation in my standing,
Which you counter by setting gifts down in my saddlebags.

So live as long as you wish, your enemies subdued,
And endure as long as you wish, your allies victorious.

A crescent in a crescent from a crescent.
