أمَولايَO my lord قُلْtell ليto me لِمْwhy أَضعتَyou neglected خَريدةًa virgin maiden
أمَولايَ قُلْ لي لِمْ أَضعتَ خَريدةً
عليهاupon her خُليٌّjewelry (apparently حُليّ) منfrom صياغةِthe crafting أُنْمُليmy fingertips
عليها خُليٌّ من صياغةِ أُنْمُلي
O my lord, tell me: why did you neglect a maiden,
My wealth, tell me why did you put forth a purchase
Adorned with jewelry fashioned by my fingertips?
On which an ant made of pearls took the toil?
ألمdid … not تخشىَyou fear جيشاًan army يَستبدُّtakes sole possession بذاتِهاof her person
ألم تخشىَ جيشاً يَستبدُّ بذاتِها
فيفْتضُّهاthen ravishes her قَسراًby force ويطمعُand is greedy فيfor الحُليthe jewelry
فيفْتضُّها قَسراً ويطمعُ في الحُلي
Did you not fear an army that would take possession of her,
Did you not fear an army that rebels by itself
Then ravish her by force and covet her jewelry?
And takes it by force, coveting the adornment?

Be gentle with that afflicted one, and take for her
With your aid, O helper of all who are afflicted.
With your help, O supporter, all who are tested,

And do not deem it right to send her far from you, for she,
And do not think to send her away from you, for she
When far away, flees at a fox cub’s bounding pace.
If sent away, will flee with a nearing slip.
