قلبيْmy heart لعهدِof the days of السرورِjoy ناسِforgetful
والحزنُand sorrow مُلقٍcasting بهِin it المرَاسيthe anchors
My heart has forgotten the days of joy,
My heart yearns for the days of joy
and sorrow casts its anchors in it.
While sorrow casts its shadow upon me
وماand nothing سِوىbut التّربِdust نَعلُthe sandal of رِجليmy foot
ولاand nothing سِوىbut الشّعرِhair تاجُthe crown of راسيmy head
And nothing but dust is the sandal on my foot,
Except for dust, my feet have no shoes
and nothing but hair is the crown on my head.
Except for hair, my head has no crown
أُرْجيI postpone معاشاًa livelihood إلىuntil لباسٍclothing
بلاwithout معاشٍa livelihood ولاand without لِباسِclothing

I hope for livelihood and clothes
with neither a livelihood nor clothes.
With no livelihood or clothes
يغصُّchokes بالقارِon pitch جَوفُthe belly of دَنّيmy wine jar
ويسكنُand inhabits العنكبوتُthe spider كاسيmy cup
The belly of my wine jar chokes on pitch,
My belly rumbles with hunger
and the spider inhabits my cup.
And spiderwebs cover my goblet
