Love of the heights wore my body away, and I crumbled,

While my saddle stood high upon a lean, rock-hard she-camel.

And a kingly disposition has taken possession of me,

And my ambition is a rebellious jinn of passion.

What a soul, by God, that has tormented me with its ambition!

Because of it I dwindle, while it grows.

Lions obey me, unyielding though they are,

And the star draws near to me, though it is far away.

And many a wasteland where the caravan spends the day in its recesses,

Wandering lost, some still standing and others mown down.

When the wind raced me there, it marveled,

And said, “God curse you! Where are you bound?”

There, my spear's length matched my night,

And the wasteland's extent—all three were long.
