كالمشرفيِّlike a Mashrafi sword إذاwhen أغمدتI am sheathed فيin فُرُشيmy bedding
وإنand if نُفضتُI am shaken منَby الحُمّىfever فكليزَنيthen a Kilizani sword
Like a Mashrafi sword when I am sheathed in my bedding;
Like a sword when sheathed in its scabbard,
and if fever shakes me, then I am a Kilizani sword.
And though I shake off the fever, it still clings to me,
ولوand if فَشاspread خبرٌnews ممّاof what مُنيتُI was afflicted بِهِwith it
بأرضِin the land of خيبرَKhaybar ظَلتْit would remain منهُbecause of it فيin مِحَنِafflictions
And were news of what has afflicted me to spread
And if the tale of what I did in Khaybar spreads,
in the land of Khaybar, it would remain in distress because of it.
I will still be in distress because of it.
بِمَwith what? التّعلُّلُseeking solace لاnot أهليmy family لديَّwith me ولاnor
عنديwith me النّديمُthe drinking companion ولاnor كَأسيmy cup ولاnor سَكَنيmy beloved
How can I find solace? My family is not with me, nor
Why make excuses? I have no family with me,
are my drinking companion, my cup, or my beloved.
No companion, no cup, no home.
الشكرُgratitude دأبيَmy habit والكُفرانُand ingratitude لستُI am not لهُgiven to it
سِيّانِalike فيin جَذَلٍjoy أصبحتُI awake أمor حَزَنِsorrow
Gratitude is my habit; I am not given to ingratitude—
Gratitude is my habit though ingratitude is not for me,
it is all the same whether I awake in joy or sorrow.
It makes no difference, in hardship I find myself, or sadness.
