وأَومضّ بالتواصُلِ ثمَّ صَدّا
I marveled at her apparition—how it came forth,
I wonder, how can she be aloof?
And flashed a hint of union, then turned away.
She flashed a smile of rapport, then turned away.

I set the snares of my sleep to catch it,
I set the snares of slumber to catch her,
And awakening cried out at it, so it fled.
But the alertness within her cried out, startling her awake.

هو الطاووسُ زيّاً واختيالاً

ولكنْ كالقَطا ليلاً تَهَدّى
It is a peacock in attire and proud bearing,
She is a peacock in splendor and vanity,
But like the sandgrouse, it found its way by night.
Yet like a cat in the night, she creeps furtively.
