كمhow many شامتٍgloater حينَwhen يَلقىhe finds مُهجتيmy soul قُبضتْhas been taken
كم شامتٍ حينَ يَلقى مُهجتي قُبضتْ
يقولُhe says أرغمتِrubbed in the dust الأيامُthe days أنفَthe nose of عليAli
يقولُ أرغمتِ الأيامُ أنفَ علي
How many a gloater, when he finds my soul has been taken,
How many gloat when they see my misfortune,
says, “The days have rubbed Ali’s nose in the dust!”
Saying, "Fate has humbled your pride."
لولاwere it not for منافعُbenefits للعافينَfor supplicants فيin كَنَفيmy shelter
لولا منافعُ للعافينَ في كَنَفي
لكانَthen it would be قربُnearness جوارِthe company of اللهِGod أَنفعَmore beneficial ليto me
لكانَ قربُ جوارِ اللهِ أَنفعَ لي
Were it not for the benefits to supplicants under my protection,
Were it not for ties binding me to the healthy,
dwelling near God would be more beneficial to me.
God's nearness would better my lot.
