And I drove the riding camels until they knelt

Before the supple-fingered scion of the Prophet,

Ali ibn Musa, succorer of those seeking bounty,

    Abu al-Qasim, the noble al-Musawi.

    رحيبِ الذرى عذبِ ماءِ الرُكيِّ

    His soil is fertile, the shoots of desire tender;

His heights are broad, the water of his wells sweet.

The two valleys of his palms overflowed with bounty,

And surged over the watercourse's stagnant pools.

Glory traced his lineage to his forefather,

Ali; and he soared with lofty fortune.

Nor does a nobleman's grove grow dense

If he is not the son of a nobleman.

Abu Qasim, O sharer of generosity,

When the udder of the massed clouds runs dry,

I came to you with the visitors,

As glad tidings come in the wake of news of death.

    فَراعِ حُقوقَ السّمِيِّ الكَنِيِّ

    And in me you had a visitor sharing your name and kunya;

So honor the rights of one sharing your name and kunya.

For this poem is a maiden; there tinkle

Upon her throat the little stones of her jewelry.

I made my love for you her bridal trousseau,

So she came to you swaying gracefully like a bride.

With it I bewitched the tongues of those who talk by night,

And I left no magic to al-Samiri.

And when I spread abroad its milky outpourings,

    People folded away al-Buhturi's brocade.

The sandgrouse, though the best-guided of birds, keep

Losing their way in it like a witless wanderer.

Toward its like my reach grew long, and it was sweet

For my side to shun a soft bed.

And drinking the cup of night travel intoxicated me,

To the music of its loud-voiced jinni.
