1. ما نُطفةٌ من حَبِّ مزنِ

    قَد بيّتوها جوفَ شَنِّ

    A drop from the beads of rainclouds,

    which they have kept overnight inside a worn waterskin,

  2. وسُلافةٌ من قَلْبِ دنِّ

    قد نَحَروهُ بقّلبِ دَنِّ

    and choice wine from the heart of a wine jar,

    which they have slaughtered by overturning a wine jar,

  3. وتصافحٌ بعدَ القلى

    وتصالحٌ غِبَّ التّجنِّي

    and a handshake after hatred,

    and reconciliation after false accusations,

  4. إلاّ كشعرِ صَديقي الْ

    فيّاضِ فاشدُد بهِ وغنِّ

    are but like the verse of my friend al-

    Fayyad—so hold fast to it and sing.
