Time’s eyelid awoke from its closed-eyed doze,

And stilled the galloping in the field of youthful dalliance.

And cast grit into lions’ eyes and the eyes of oryxes,

And buried the joy of the earth in the depths of the earth.

And caught us unawares, carrying off a jealously cherished treasure.

With news of him, the death-crier deafened those who give and withhold.

    وَلَكِن سَلا جَفنيّ عَن لَذّةِ الغَمضِ

    So do not ask me, you two, about my heart and its state;

But ask my eyelids about the pleasure of sleep.

My two friends, why have you turned from your pledge and fidelity,

And neglected its voluntary observance and its binding duty?

Yes, such is this world: its enjoyment is scant.

We do wrong whenever it gladdens us; it angers even as it pleases.

The cups of its heady wine are a mirage upon a level plain,

And its promise is given over to betrayal and breach.

To God we are all returning,

And to God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth.

Solace to the haunts of pleasure, for their Khamis

Has departed from them; fold them up after him and go.

And tell the nights of companionship: Lament him and put on

Long, ample robes of mourning, and never take them off.

And tell him who coaxes his oud with his fingertips

To bite them in anguish, with the fiercest of bites.

For he has nothing left but answering the echo,

And the strings offering consolation to one another.

And bid the tambourine’s cheeks be slapped in mourning for the one who

Cast the instrument of melody to be broken and crushed.

And tell the singer: Wail and raise your voice, for

Your existence after al-Zayn is just like utter nothingness.

And tell the eyes of graceful women: Close over the grit,

For the birds’ orator told them: Close.

And shower pearls upon the roses of the cheeks,

And rival the falling dew in the tender narcissus.

For death has carried off this Khamis al-Zayn,

And refused ransom in wealth, life, and honor.

May the early rain water his grave as it pours,

And may sweet basil spread over it, lengthwise and breadthwise.

And may he be greeted with divine favor and companionship whenever

His remembrance saddens the gazelles and lions in their lairs.

My God, Khamis al-Zayn has sought Your gate,

And whoever seeks it lays down his provision bags to be shaken out.

Pleading through the birth of the accepted intercessor among creation,

When worshippers weep in fear of being brought to judgment.

    فَأرّخهُ يَقصُد ما يَروقُ وَما يُرضي

    And he came with this purpose, joyful and serene;

So record its date: “He seeks what delights and what pleases.”
