    The face of congratulations has become radiant today.

    And the universe shone, and the air grew fragrant.

    And good fortune greeted us, and gladness arrived.

    And joy crowned the horizon, as you see.

    And in Tunis, the dawn of solace shone forth.

    And the garden of righteous deeds stirred and bloomed.

    شَيخُ الشَيوخِ القُطبُ مِصباحُ الوَرى

    And through Ibrahim, the cure for our cares appeared:

    The sheikh of sheikhs, the Pole, the lamp of humankind;

    صَدرُ الثِقاتِ الكُمَّلِ الشمّ الذرى

    Pillar of sacred law, pride of Ahmad's faith;

    Foremost of the trustworthy and accomplished, whose summits soar;

    The banner of those who spread the sciences, and the best of those

    Who ever led prayer at a prayer niche and illumined a pulpit.

    His piercing understanding dispels the darkness of perplexity,

    So you see it, after despair, become radiant.

    And he turns his mind upon abstruse subtleties,

    So his star cleaves the murky dust-cloud.

    And he reveals secrets whose beauty almost leads

    To souls being truly sold and bought for them.

    More delightful to the ears than attaining one's wishes,

    And sweeter upon the eyelids than the drowsiness of sleep.

    How often we have worn, from their wrought necklaces,

    Precious pearls and gems around our necks.

    And how often we have plucked blossoms from their garden,

    Until we wore life as a green robe.

    And in your teaching of al-Ju'fi, how many you have clarified:

    Subtleties too fine for sight, and therefore unseen.

    And you traversed within it deserts and barren wastes,

    Some of which leave even the expert bewildered.

    وَالآنَ حانَ بِخَتمِهِ حَمدُ السَرى

    And you journeyed by night, diligent in unraveling its symbols;

    And now, at its completion, it is time to praise the night journey.

    So congratulations first to you, and to us through you,

    And to whoever holds you in special affection, and to all humankind.

    And may your Lord reward you with the best He has bestowed,

    And prolong your life as you wish, and still more.

    And may you remain a noonday sun, through whom are dispelled

    Shadowy doubts; and may you remain rain pouring down.

    And to you, a poem woven from the best effort of one with little to give,

    From a mind that hardship has kept from stirring,

    And a poetic gift grown cold, and time that has ravaged me,

    With ravages that have kept us from enduring.

    Its torrent has reached the hilltops; so be generous with what

    Saves the drowning man, and be the noblest of those who buy.

    أَعدَدتَ مِنهُ إِلى المُعانِدِ عَسكَرا

    For when you strengthen your devoted friend with your prayers,

    You will have made of him an army against the adversary;

    And I shall attain my hopes through my heart's sincerity

    Toward you; and live, more wary, as an object of stinginess [wording unclear].

    May you ever remain radiant on the horizon of happiness,

    Dispelling, with your resolve, the greatest trouble.
