Stop and reflect, silent with grief and weeping.

And contemplate the state of one who has come to rest in the earth.

While a man is honored and secure,

The poor soul finds himself alone in the open.

Indeed, in this is a lesson for one

Who has seen this world as dreams of slumber.

So take provisions from what is little and fleeting,

For an abode that encompasses all humankind.

Like this occupant of the grave—for he

Was a leading dignitary and emir of emirs.

The keeper of the seal, Uthman, who

Was a leading dignitary and emir of emirs.

Endowed with beauty and majesty, he was adorned by

A lovely, cheerful countenance, like a breeze drifting by,

    And virtues and dazzling perfection,

And modesty that revealed lofty qualities.

May God, exalted be He, illumine his grave,

And pour grace and hospitality into it.

And protect him, O Lord, for his chronogram is:

    Protect Uthman, emir of emirs.
