تَأَمَّل مَليّاً وَاِسبِلِ الدَمعَ بِالخَدِّ

تَأَمَّل مَليّاً وَاِسبِلِ الدَمعَ بِالخَدِّ

فَما أَنتَ في دارِ المُقامِ وَلا الخُلدِ

فَما أَنتَ في دارِ المُقامِ وَلا الخُلدِ

Reflect at length, and let tears flow down your cheek.

Contemplate for a while and let tears flow down your cheeks

For you are not in an abode of permanence or immortality.

For you are neither in the abode of eternity nor immortality

بَلى أَنتَ في دارٍ سِهامُ خُطوبَها

بَلى أَنتَ في دارٍ سِهامُ خُطوبَها

تُصيبُ وَتُصمي حَوزَةَ الأَسَدِ الوَردِ

تُصيبُ وَتُصمي حَوزَةَ الأَسَدِ الوَردِ

Rather, you are in an abode whose calamities' arrows

Rather you are in an abode whose calamities

strike and bring death to the tawny lion's domain.

Strike and annihilate the garden of the lion and rose

وَهَيهاتَ أَن تُغنيَ الصوارِمُ وَالقَنا

وَهَيهاتَ أَن تُغنيَ الصوارِمُ وَالقَنا

عَلى صَرحِ رَبِّ التاجِ أَو رَبَّةِ العِقدِ

عَلى صَرحِ رَبِّ التاجِ أَو رَبَّةِ العِقدِ

And never can sharp swords and spears offer protection

Alas, the swords and spears cannot avail

to the palace of the lord of the crown or the lady of the necklace.

Against the palace of the Lord of the Crown or the Lady of Necklaces

فَطوبى لِمَن حازَ الرِضى مِثلَ هَذِهِ

فَطوبى لِمَن حازَ الرِضى مِثلَ هَذِهِ

زُلَيخا ابنَةِ الباشا حُسَينٍ أَخي المَجدِ

زُلَيخا ابنَةِ الباشا حُسَينٍ أَخي المَجدِ

So blessed is whoever has won favor, like this woman,

Happy is one who has won pleasure like this -

Zulaykha, daughter of Pasha Husayn, brother to glory,

Zuleikha, daughter of Pasha Hussein, my brother of glory

وَزَوجِ وَزيرِ الحَربِ زروقَ أَحمَدٍ

وَزَوجِ وَزيرِ الحَربِ زروقَ أَحمَدٍ

وَصاحِبَة العُرف المؤَمَّلِ وَالرفدِ

وَصاحِبَة العُرف المؤَمَّلِ وَالرفدِ

and wife of the minister of war, Ahmad Zarruq,

And wife of the Minister of War, Zorok Ahmed

and a lady of hoped-for kindness and bounty.

And possessor of the expected dignity and provision

صَحيحُ حَديثِ المَجدِ عَنها مُسَلسَلٌ

صَحيحُ حَديثِ المَجدِ عَنها مُسَلسَلٌ

عَنِ الأَهلِ وَالإِخوانِ وَالآبِ وَالجَدِّ

عَنِ الأَهلِ وَالإِخوانِ وَالآبِ وَالجَدِّ

The authentic account of her glory forms an unbroken chain

True is the glorious speech about her, handed down

from her family, brothers, father, and grandfather.

From family, brethren, father, and grandfather

وَرَيحانَةٌ وَلا الجِنانُ اِستَفَزَّها

وَرَيحانَةٌ وَلا الجِنانُ اِستَفَزَّها

لَما اِستَبدَلَت مِن قَصرِها مُفرَدَ اللَحدِ

لَما اِستَبدَلَت مِن قَصرِها مُفرَدَ اللَحدِ

And a sprig of sweet basil—yet the gardens did not lure her away

She was not incited like a basil plant in gardens

when she exchanged her palace for the solitary grave.

When she exchanged her palace for the solitary grave

وَلَكِن دَرَت أَنَّ الحَياةَ مُعارَةٌ

وَلَكِن دَرَت أَنَّ الحَياةَ مُعارَةٌ

وَهَل دامَ في جيدٍ نَظيمٌ مِنَ العِقدِ

وَهَل دامَ في جيدٍ نَظيمٌ مِنَ العِقدِ

But she knew that life is on loan,

Rather, she realized that life is but a loan

and has a necklace's string of jewels ever endured upon a neck?

And does any knot in a rope of pearls last forever?

فَحازَت مِنَ الدارَينِ مِن فَضلِ رَبِّها

فَحازَت مِنَ الدارَينِ مِن فَضلِ رَبِّها

وَخَفَّفَ عَنّا ذَلِكَ مِن لَوعَةِ الوَجدِ

وَخَفَّفَ عَنّا ذَلِكَ مِن لَوعَةِ الوَجدِ

So she gained the blessings of both worlds through her Lord's grace,

So from her Lord she attained grace from both worlds

and that eased some of the burning anguish of our grief.

And that lessened for us the bitterness of grief

وَعَزَّ بِجَنّاتِ الخُلودِ مُقامُها

وَعَزَّ بِجَنّاتِ الخُلودِ مُقامُها

وَفازَت فَأرّخ عَزَّ في جَنَّةِ الخُلدِ

وَفازَت فَأرّخ عَزَّ في جَنَّةِ الخُلدِ

And her resting place was exalted in the gardens of eternity,

And her abode was honored with the gardens of eternity

and she triumphed; so mark the date: 'Exalted in the garden of eternity.'

Thus she attained success. Record the date of her immortality in the garden of eternity.
