I adjure you by God, O my heart:
I implore you, my paradise,

What is the state of one who left the gardens?

Or, toward reunion and closeness,
Or is there after this estrangement any closeness and affection for me?
can I draw near after this estrangement?
Who will grant me the most delightful of creatures for my soul?

Who will bring me the person my soul most desires,
Attaching my desire to the precious one.
my heart's desire, my precious treasure?

I parted from him after long companionship,
And he would spend many a night as a consoling friend.
and so often he had been my companion by night.

How often our union quenched my five-day thirst,
And happiness resided in our intimacy.
and good fortune had alighted in an army.
With him I would assault all those who reproached me,

And in passion’s reigns lies the bridle.
and the reins lie in Love's right hand.

And now he hopes for it as safety.
yet now he hopes for it as for safety.
