Crown the hills, O clouds of April!

They are a place of repose and flowing water,

And a place where men of letters set down their saddlebags.

They enter it in peace, secure,

    And exchange tales of youth,

Setting the necks of those present swaying,

With joy that passed within this sanctuary.

Ah, what a wedding feast we enjoyed there!

The dome of delight—how could you know

What a house of passion it is for souls!

The sea enfolded it, embracing it,

And the hands of the vines clothed it in a robe.

And the full moon sped toward it,

Over a bridge of silver and pearls.

And you see the shore and the sand dunes

    Gathering every oryx and gazelle,

Grazing freely, tipsy; and whenever they tired of

The string of the plaintive Tunisian lute,

They shook the tambourine and sang melodies

    That Ziryab fashioned in al-Andalus.

Will time, my friend, restore an age

That passed in this Abdali abode,

Which the Persians never attained in Bawwan's valley,

No, nor the Arabs of al-Liwa or Hawmal?

You greet Mihrjan with good wishes,

    And when Nowruz arrives, proclaim:

Nowruz has come, O drinking companions,

Trailing his robes of fine silk,

To embroider al-Marsa's shore with what

Rouses the cupbearer to hurry the cups along.

And he is a Persian gazelle, come

From the presence of Kisra, the world's king of kings.

    So observe his accustomed rite,

As you observed the rite of Mihrjan.

And pour freely, and come at the call,

And slaughter as an offering—how wondrous!—the daughter of the wine-jars,

Around a garden on its hills, where a kiss was laid

Upon the rose's cheek by the narcissus's mouth.

Then, when it grew bashful, the rain bestowed on it

    Pearls from a gushing rain-cloud.

    The blossoms began gathering them

In cups of the anemones' rubies,

And watered its blackbird, which grew merry,

And sang a melody upon the leafy bough.

Then it swayed in rapture and devised

The art of marking dance-rhythm with its slender form.

Then the sea grew lovestruck, surged, and cast

Its pearls to those in the gathering.

And the east wind rippled it and traced

Upon it the shapes of the coursing, hiding stars.
