A beloved kept his pledge and came by night as a dream-vision,

And freed souls held captive in the bonds of love.

    فَلِلَّهِ ما أَحلىَ وَاِنسان مِن سَرا

    He wrapped himself in darkness and arrived with greetings;

By God, how sweet was the person who came by night! [Wording unclear.]

From him the air grew fragrant around me, as though I

Had breathed through him [uncertain reading], in Béja, the breath of al-Khadra.

May clouds of joy water the dweller of al-Khadra,

And may a rain cloud water its hills, making the flowers smile,

And greet its dwellings and bless its resident,

And inspire him to praise and gratitude for his abode.

Haunts of my pleasures and homes of my youthful longing,

And the playground of my dear friends, who adorned time.

In their place I received a loneliness that beset my heart,

And drew keen Indian-steel blades to wage war against me.

Ah, can one far from home return to al-Khadra,

And lay down his staff of wandering—nay, break it?

Perhaps Abu al-Abbas will cherish my affection,

And, if he wishes, through it turn my plight to ease.

For he is the one who nurtured, refined, and chose me,

And bestowed favors whose pearls encircled my neck.

Had Abu al-Abbas not stirred my poetic gift,

It would have produced neither prose nor verse.

    نَضُمُّ عَلى عَلياهُ مِن حُبِّهِ الصَدرا

    May he ever remain a leader, foremost in noble attainments;

We clasp his eminence to our breast out of love for him.

And may he remain happy in life and circumstance whenever

A western lightning flash gleams, reminding me of al-Khadra.
