Was it because ʿAṭīqa's goats found lush pasture and grazed

I roamed with a dear friend in meadows green,

in the gullies of al-Marut, made dark-green by their summer rain,

Sipping sweet draughts of wine our thirst to quench.

تعرضت لي حتى ضربتك ضربة

على الرأسٍ يكبو لليدين أميمها

that you challenged me until I struck you a blow

You came upon me till with sudden blow

on the head, whose brain-wounded victim falls onto his hands?

Upon my head you brought your hand to clench.

إذا قاسها الآسي النطاسي أرعشت

أنامل كفيه وجاشت هزومها

أنامل كفيه وجاشت هزومها

When the expert healer measures it, it sets trembling

When touched by soft and slender fingers five,

the fingertips of his hands, and its cavities seethe.

My trembling hands could scarce their grasp unclench.

كليب لئام الناس قد تعلمونه

كليب لئام الناس قد تعلمونه

وأنت إذا عدت كليب لئيمها

وأنت إذا عدت كليب لئيمها

Kulayb are base among men; you all know it well.

You know this dog is shunned by all mankind,

And you, when Kulayb are counted, are their basest man:

Yet if a dog, I'm of the noblest blench.

لقى مقعد الأحساب منقطع به

إذا القوم راموا خطة لا يرومها

a castoff, crippled in ancestral honor, left stranded—

When men agree upon a treacherous plot,

when the men pursue an undertaking, he does not pursue it.

My place is empty on the traitor's bench.

أترجو كليب أن يجيء حديثها

بخير وقد أعبى كليبا قديمها

بخير وقد أعبى كليبا قديمها

Does Kulayb hope that its present will bring

You hoped, o dog, her sweet words comfort brought,

good, when its past has already wearied Kulayb?

When you had wearied her with whines unstrench'd.

In the time of Dhu al-Qarnayn, Mujashiʿ were

In days of horned beast, soft constancy

mighty: no one who would oppress them could overpower them.

Was found in maidens, not to be estranged.
