By my life, if his fetter has distracted al-Farazdaq,
By my life, if Al-Farazdaq forgets his chains
And Nawār’s caskets—one containing oil and one cleanser—
And the shining lights of perfumed oil and bathing,

بديهة لأداني الجراء ولا وعل
At dawn a Mujāshiʿ will surely be roused from me,
Tomorrow morn I shall rouse from me a witty poem
Spontaneously—neither short-winded in the race nor timid.
Whose flowing verses will make the ignorant tremble.
