Is it true you have not closed your eyes for a night,

and slept it through among its sleepers?

You remember that woman—yet how can you reach her,

when she has broken part of her promise?

So turn away—you turn from a man firm of heart,

a joiner of bonds and a severer of them.

And many a woman like you, proud of her youth,

    had fragrant perfume clinging to her body;

I approached her, with darkness coming to my aid,

and an unwary eye and its sleep.

I spent the night taking her husband's place,

as Nu'm's master and her suitor.

And many a man who turns away, with what he has,

from reproving women and their counsel,

and a fair man who mingles with the noble,

    who never hides from those who vie in drinking it;

he came to consult me about wine

at night; I told him, “Drink it at dawn.”

Give us ease; let us hasten to a true morning draught,

ahead of other people and those who envy it.

So we rose before our rooster had yet crowed,

to dark wine in its seller's keeping.

He had selected it from the earliest vintage—

a little blue-eyed man, sure it would not go unsold.

We told him, “This one—bring it,

for a white she-camel on her handler's rope.”

    وَلَيسَت بِعَدلٍ لِأَندادِها

    He said, “You must add nine for me;

it is not on a par with its equals.”

I told our servant, “Give him that.”

Then, when he saw its witnesses present,

he lit his shelter with a lamp,

while night shrouded its woven fabric.

    “Our dirhams are all good,

so do not detain us by testing them.”

He rose and poured us wine

that calmed us after making us tremble:

    dusky-red, revealing its crimson

    when it cleared after foaming.

Like an ostrich chick's crop, there in its cask,

when tilted downward after standing upright.

He went round us with his ewer,

his palm stained with its mulberry tint.

Riding camels with their saddles spent the night

beside us, and horses with their felt saddlecloths,

belonging to men who had exhausted

their own wine before this wine ran out.

We departed, delighted by a tipsiness

that made us swerve after striking us down.

And many a wilderness whose white antelopes you would take

for men of Iyad on its hard ground,

where the guide tells his companions,

“Do not miss any of its landmarks,”

I crossed when its mirage-waves raced,

on a long-maned she-camel striding in her strength,

a six-year-old packed with dense flesh,

with ample growth throughout her body.

You see her, when she travels through a night,

eager for night travel after a whole night's march,

like a wide-eyed wild cow whose calf remained

on a peak in Jaww, amid its stony uplands.

She spent the night grieving, her belly drawn tight

over her soul's sorrow and her solitude.

At sunrise there came upon her

trained hounds, bounding as they were urged on.

She wheeled, and four wheeled after her,

straining after her as she too strained.

She did not emerge into the bare open plain

    only to leave it after being driven to flight;

but whenever the swift hounds pressed her,

she wheeled upon one with her stabbing horn.

Her horn held them back from her hide,

piercing ribs beside their upper forelegs.

To that cow I liken her, as she went forth,

cleaving the stony sands on her upward course,

    bound for Salamah, Dhu Fa'ish—

today her appointed meeting with him is due.

And how many a level plain lay before your house,

and low sandy flats and their piled dunes,

and a trackless wilderness, its expanse dark at night,

where its owl's call kept me company,

and the setting down of a waterskin and strapping it behind,

and loosening saddlecloths and stowing them away!

If Himyar sets its affairs right

and tires of its sons' exchanging draughts,

you are found, when they make peace, to be their best,

and your fire-stick sparks most readily of all theirs.

But if their war is kindled among them,

and grows hot for them after cooling,

you are found patient under its losses,

and the heat of wars and their recurrence.

And companies ask, “Who is there for us

in a recurring war and its charge and countercharge?”

    فَقَد جَرَّبوها لِمُرتادِها

    Before it, they had fat about their kidneys;

yet they have tested it for anyone who seeks it.

    Lavish in gifts, he faces

    losses that he never counts,

and many a bride taken without a dowry,

and another of whom he is told, “Ransom her,”

and one pulled from a man's courtyard

    to another's camel-yard, her new owner's.

She yields milk under names not her own,

newly acquired after being long-held stock.

He crushes winter, when the nursing she-camels

have the splints on their upper forelegs slipping loose.

And your people, if they pledge a woman's protection,

stand in the place of her close kin.

They will not seek her intimacy for wealth,

nor surrender her because she is poor.

Men who, whenever they witness a raid,

stand as foes to its rival forces.
