Bid Hurayra farewell; the caravan is departing.

But can you bear a farewell, O man?

Radiant-faced and long-haired, her side teeth gleaming,

she walks softly, like someone sore-footed and mired in mud.

Her walk from her neighbor's house is like

the passing of a cloud, neither slow nor hurried.

You hear her ornaments whisper when she turns away,

like a rustling senna bush helped by the wind.

She is not one whose appearance the neighbors dislike,

nor do you see her stealthily prying into a neighbor's secrets.

It would almost fell her, did she not brace herself—

the languor, when she rises to visit her neighbors.

When she wrestles with an equal for a while, she tires,

and her lower back and rump sway.

Full in her sash, loose in her shift, soft and plump,

when she moves gently, her waist almost gives way.

Hurayra has turned away from us and does not speak to us.

What folly in Umm Khulayd! Whose bond will she maintain?

Is it because she saw a night-blind man, harmed by

the calamities of fate and a wit-destroying, maddening age?

A fine bedfellow on a cloudy morning, laying her down

for a man's pleasure, neither harsh nor foul-smelling.

Full-hipped and pampered, her elbows softly rounded,

as though the hollow of her foot were shod with thorns.

When she rises, musk wafts from clustered pods,

and rosy jasmine oil spreads from her sleeves.

No grassy meadow among the meadows of the uplands,

green, lavishly watered by a pouring raincloud,

whose radiant blossoms smile back at the sun,

    girdled with thick, full-grown vegetation,

is ever sweeter than she in the fragrance it spreads,

nor more beautiful than she when late afternoon draws near.

I fell in love with her by chance, while she fell for a man

other than me, and that man fell for another woman besides her.

And a maiden loved him, though he did not seek her,

one of her people; dying, he raves about her, distraught.

And another woman fell for me, though she does not suit me.

Thus love came together, all of it a wasting passion.

Each of us is love-stricken, raving about the beloved,

far or near, ensnared or ensnaring.

Hurayra said, when I came to visit her,

'Woe to me over you, and woe to me from you, O man!'

O you who see a raincloud I have watched all night,

as though the lightning at its edges were flames!

It has trailing banks and a swollen, rain-working heart,

girdled with unbroken bucketfuls of water.

Amusement did not distract me from it as I watched,

nor the pleasure of a cup, nor languor.

So I said to the drinkers in Durna, already drunk,

'Watch!'—but how can a drunken drinker watch?—

lightning illuminating the valley bends where it falls,

while at al-Khabiyya a cloud from it pours down rain.

They said: Nimar, then the valley of al-Khal—it drenched them both,

    then al-'Asjadiyya, then al-Abla', then al-Rijal.

Then al-Safh flows, then Khinzir and its stony sandflat,

until the rises, then the mountain, surged with its waters,

until its water was borne with difficulty

by Rawd al-Qata, then the gentle dune of al-Ghayna.

It waters dwellings of hers that have now become remote,

off the track, avoided by led horses and grazing herds.

And a desolate land, like the back of a shield,

where at night the jinn make a clamor along its edges,

none sets out for it in summer's heat, riding across it,

except those with patience for what they undertake.

    في مِرفَقَيها إِذا اِستَعرَضتَها فَتَلُ

    I crossed it on a weary, sturdy, long-striding she-camel;

seen from the side, her elbows turn outward.

If you see us barefoot, with no sandals,

that is how we are: now barefoot, now shod.

Often I steal a chance while the master of the house is off guard,

though he is wary of me, yet finds no escape.

Often I lead youthful passion for a day, and it follows me,

and often a passionate, amorous man keeps me company.

Often I have gone early to the tavern, followed by

    a meat-roaster, quick-handed, nimble, fleet, brisk,

among young men like the swords of India, who well know

that stratagems do not protect the man of cunning.

Reclining, I shared with them sprigs of sweet basil

and tart wine, its strainer dripping.

They do not come to their senses from it while it is still there,

except to say, 'Bring it!' whether drinking again or taking their first draught.

A man with bottles hurries about with it, wearing earrings,

his tunic's lower hem tucked up, busy at his work.

And an answering lute—you would think the harp hears it—

when the singing-girl, in her single garment, trills to it.

From all that, many a day I have spent in pleasure,

and among my experiences are long revelry and love.

And women trailing silk hems from time to time,

and women strutting with rounded pads upon their rumps.

Carry a message to Yazid of Banu Shayban:

Abu Thubayt, will you not cease burning with rage?

Will you not stop hewing at our tamarisk?

You will not harm it as long as camels groan.

You incite Mas'ud's band and his brothers against us

at the encounter, bring them to ruin, then stand aside.

I shall surely know you if the call to arms grows urgent for us,

and war is kindled by the roving heralds, and they depart.

Like one butting a rock one day to split it:

he did not harm it; the ibex only weakened his horn.

I shall surely know you if our enmity becomes earnest,

and help is sought from you—you are forever borne away.

You set Dhu al-Jaddayn's spears to meet our onslaught

at the encounter, bringing them to ruin while you stand aside.

Do not sit back after you have fed it firewood,

seeking refuge from its evil one day and praying fervently.

There were among the people of Kahf, if they stayed behind,

and al-Jashiriyya, men who strove and exchanged arrows.

Ask Banu Asad about us, for they know

that a sample of our exploits will reach you.

Ask Qushayr and 'Abd Allah, all of them,

and ask Rabi'a about us, and how we act.

We fight them, then we kill them

when we meet, for they have wronged us and acted foolishly.

No! You claimed that we would not fight you.

For men like you, O our people, we are killers,

until the tribe's chief is left reclining,

while hurried women fend things off him with their palms.

An Indian sword struck him and killed him outright,

or a straight, seasoned shaft from the spears of al-Khatt.

Often we spear the ass in the hidden flesh of its haunch,

and many a champion perishes upon our spears.

Will you desist? Nothing restrains men of excess

like spear-thrusts that consume oil and wicks.

Indeed, by the life of Him for whom their hoof-pads traced tracks,

and to whom the fat cattle were driven:

if you have slain a chief who was not confronting you,

we shall surely kill his like among you, and exact like for like.

If you are afflicted by us after a battle,

you will not find us disowning the tribe's bloodshed.

We are the horsemen on the day of al-Hinw, in broad daylight,

on either side of Futayma, neither unsteady in the saddle nor unarmed.

They said, 'Mount!' We said, 'That is our custom.'

Or will you dismount? For we are a people who fight on foot.
