Is it at midday that the neighbors bid farewell,

or in the evening—or earlier than that, in the early morning?

My eye brought me near to Quraybah,

on the day at Dhu al-Shara, along with borrowed love,

and my farewell to youth, and a heart that, when it grows

obstinate, is stubborn and can scarcely be swayed.

So my praise of you is the finest praise,

whether you draw near or a dwelling carries you far away.

And my concern is for you, wherever I am and you are,

and to you go dreams and poems.

You are our concern and the greatest of our wishes,

and the subject of our conversations, even if you are not visited.

And I find the day long while you are far away,

and the nights are short when you draw near.
