عُ وَالعَينُ مِن بَينِهِم تَسفَحُ
I say, on the morning the whole company departed,
and my eye pours tears at parting from them,
كَدَفعِlike the outpouring دَوالِجَwater-drawers مِنfrom أُكرَةٍa water pit
كَدَفعِ دَوالِجَ مِن أُكرَةٍ

مَواهِبَ جَمٌّ لَها المَنضَحُ
like water-drawers pouring from a water pit,
from pools whose watering-place is brimming.

I strive to keep it from weeping for them,
yet it overcomes my patience and will not run dry.

If sorrow depletes some of its water,
its swelling torrent engulfs it, overflowing,

for a heart bearing a wound from them.
Indeed, they have often inflicted wounds.

Will you endure separation, or make your way
to Salma? That, then, would be easier

نِ بِالمَرءِ فيما رَجا أَنجَحُ
then surely patience, when time turns
against a man, is likelier to win what he hopes for.

obey the spiteful by abandoning you,
and long before, the spiteful were heeded against you.

Nor grieve over them because a scheme was pursued
by an enemy, and they showed no leniency.

So, when they reflect, they will know
whether your bosom or his is more sincere,

and who is truthful in what he says,

So he almost turned back at my admonition
from folly; the one who turns back prospers.

Then, from his love for Tuktam, he was overtaken
by lingering afflictions, the mildest of which wounds.
