أَوجَعَ القَلبَ قَولُها حِينَ راحُوا

أَوجَعَ القَلبَ قَولُها حِينَ راحُوا

لي تَقَدَّم إِلى المَبيتِ هُدِيتا

لي تَقَدَّم إِلى المَبيتِ هُدِيتا

Her words hurt my heart when they departed:

Her words when they left pained my heart

to me: “Go ahead to the lodging—may you be guided!

As she came to me, a gift for the night’s stay

هَل يَضُرَّنَّكَ المَسيرُ لَئِن سِر

هَل يَضُرَّنَّكَ المَسيرُ لَئِن سِر

تَ قَريباً وَإِن بَلَغتَ المَبيتا

تَ قَريباً وَإِن بَلَغتَ المَبيتا

Would the journey harm you if you walked

Will the journey hurt you, even if you go

a short way, even if you reached the lodging?”

A short while, even if you reach the hostelry

قُلتُ إِنّي أَخشى عَلَيكِ عُيوُناً

قُلتُ إِنّي أَخشى عَلَيكِ عُيوُناً

من عِداةٍ وَذا شَذاةٍ مَقِيتا

من عِداةٍ وَذا شَذاةٍ مَقِيتا

I said, “I fear for you the eyes

I said I fear for you the eyes

of enemies, and a hateful, malicious man.”

Of enemies and those with hate so vile

ثُمَّ قالَت قَد كُنتُ آذَنتُ أَهلي

ثُمَّ قالَت قَد كُنتُ آذَنتُ أَهلي

قَبلَ هَذا عَلى الَّذي قَد هَوِيتا

قَبلَ هَذا عَلى الَّذي قَد هَوِيتا

Then she said, “I had already informed my family

Then she said I had told my family

before this about what you desired.

Before this of what I desired

ما سَلِيمنا إِلَيكَ مُنذُ اِصطَحَبنا

ما سَلِيمنا إِلَيكَ مُنذُ اِصطَحَبنا

في الَّذي تَشتَهي وَما إِن عُصِيتا

في الَّذي تَشتَهي وَما إِن عُصِيتا

[Opening unclear as written] to you, since we became companions,

We have not been safe with you since we accompanied

in what you desire; and you have never been disobeyed.”

You in what you crave, and we did not disobey
