Have the dear companions departed today, or have they not left?

Is that false, or is what they whispered true?

    وَقَد يَطِيبُ بِهِم نَجدٌ إِذا جَلَسُوا

    Were they to leave, Najd would bring its dweller no joy;

yet Najd is pleasant through them whenever they settle there.

From the shock of the parting they spoke of, I keep

shedding tears, while breath is wrung from me.

As though I were a bereft man, held hostage by love's torment,

    distracted at heart, with his plight unclear to him;

or an inveterate drinker to whom wine is sweet,

among habitual drinkers, his reason snatched from him.

I taste no sleep; I keep watch until morning,

as sentries guard one another, fearing a breach.

I watch the stars through the murky length of night,

until dawn appears, the lingering darkness its cloak,

for love of Layla; and truly, whatever land

Layla inhabits, in that land I am held captive.

The tale-bearers hope that I fear them over you,

yet I had thought they had despaired of that.

Like frogs, they croak among themselves

when alone—but when I meet them, they are mute.

And you know, when the night seems daunting

to some men and they fear its terror and hide away,

that many a dark, storm-shaken night,

pitch-black, with no trace of the north wind to be found,

I have spent braving its terror on my way toward you,

while men dozed on nights like it.

I cross a wilderness whose depths stretch far, with none beside me

but God, the sword, and the horse.
