يَقَرُّ بعيني أن أرى نوء مزنةٍ

It gladdens my eyes to see rain from a cloud

My eyes find joy in seeing the fires of Muznah,

From Yemen, or to have the south wind blow.

Yemeni, or in the southern winds blowing.

لقد شغفتني أم بكرٍ وبَغَّضَت

لقد شغفتني أم بكرٍ وبَغَّضَت

إلي نساء مالهن ذنوب

إلي نساء مالهن ذنوب

Umm Bakr has indeed captured my heart and made hateful

I was enamored with Umm Bakr but I hated

To me women who have done no wrong.

women who had no faults.

أراك من الضرب الذي يجمع الهوى

أراك من الضرب الذي يجمع الهوى

ودونَك نسوان لهن ضروبُ

ودونَك نسوان لهن ضروبُ

I see you as the kind that gathers love to itself,

I see you are of the kind who brings love together

And beneath you are women of various kinds.

and below you are women of all stripes.

وقد كنتُ قبل اليوم أحسبُ أنني

ذلولٌ بأيام الفراق أديبُ
