إذا نحنُ زرنا أُمَّ عمرو تعرَّضت

علروض وحالت دونها عدواءُ

If we visit Umm 'Amr's abode, she appears

In the way, preventing our progress, hostile.

كتمتُ الهوى يا أم عمرو فَخَبَّرَت

به زَفَراتٌ ما بهنَّ خفاءُ

I concealed my passion, O Umm 'Amr, but it was betrayed

By sighs that could not be suppressed.

يَكَدنَ يُقَطِّعنَ الحيازيمَ كُلَّما

تَمَطَّت بهنَّ الزفرةُ الصُعداءُ

They almost rupture the intestines whenever

The gasping sigh struggles out.
