بمكة والأنضاءُ ملقى رِحالها
I say to a mufti whom I met one day
I said to a youth one day when I met him
in Mecca, with the weary mounts’ saddles laid down:
In Mecca, while the litters were depositing their loads:
فديتكmay I be your ransom أخبرنيtell me عنabout الظبيةthe female gazelle التيwhose
فديتك أخبرني عن الظبية التي

أضر بجسمي منذُ حينٍ خَيالها
“May I be your ransom—tell me of the gazelle whose
"May I ransom you, tell me about the gazelle
phantom has harmed my body for some time.”
Who for a while now has been bewitching my thoughts with her image?"
فقالthen he said بلىyes واللَهby God أنthat سيصيبهاwill befall her
فقال بلى واللَه أن سيصيبها

من اللَه بلوى في الحياة تنالها
He said, “Yes, by God, there will befall her
He answered: "Yes, by God, God will afflict her
an affliction from God that will overtake her in life.”
With misfortune in this life."

Then I said, unable to restrain the first rush of tears,
I said, as tears streamed unchecked down my shirt:
streaming swiftly onto the opening of my shirt:
"May God pardon her every sin, though she gave me little of her love."

“May God forgive her every sin, and may she be granted
her wishes, though her favors were scant.”
