Alas for Najah! What is this she has claimed?

Has a wild beast touched her, or has madness afflicted her?

I was told her [visitors] had said, though they knew nothing:

"A fault, grey hair, and an old man with no livestock!"

As for your other taunt, you already know

that I am the tribe's gallant, neither a weakling nor a miser.

I do not guard the house against its mistress's women neighbors,

nor will poverty ally itself with my wife before you.

We have a large herd of red camels with raised udders,

in them a resource to return to, and in their tails generosity.

God sows them from the flank, and we reap them,

so smaller herds cannot withstand what we do.

If milk fails the guest when we are in need,

fat from their loins will not fail the guest.

When a rightful claim arises, the sword does not [prize] their lineage,

nor does an oath linger overnight upon their necks.

They give the neighbor the first drink, though they circle thirstily,

and the water is crowded round, scant at its spring, shared out.

Nor does their thirst at the watering-place unsettle

our forbearance, while the ill-tempered fellow-drinker blazes up.

    ما يشتَري الحمدُ إلّا دونَهُ قحمُ

    Into every outlay that earns praise you plunge them;

praise is bought only with ordeals standing in the way.
