سلاماً فأومى بالبنانِ المخَضَّبِ

Peace upon him who, at his parting, could not manage

Peace be upon him who could not speak when we parted

a farewell greeting, so he gestured with his dyed fingertips.

Peace, and he gestured with blood-stained fingers

فما اسطَعتُ توديعاً لهُ بِسوى البُكا

فما اسطَعتُ توديعاً لهُ بِسوى البُكا

وذلك جهدُ المُستهامِ المُعذَّبِ

وذلك جهدُ المُستهامِ المُعذَّبِ

So I could bid him farewell with nothing but weeping,

For I could not bid him farewell except with tears

and that is all the lovesick, tormented lover can do.

That is the only recourse of the tormented, mute one
