لا تَفخرَنَّ عَليكَ بعدُ بَقِيَّةٌ

لا تَفخرَنَّ عَليكَ بعدُ بَقِيَّةٌ

والفخرُ يَكمُلُ لِلفَتى المتكاملِ

والفخرُ يَكمُلُ لِلفَتى المتكاملِ

Do not boast; something still remains against you.

Do not boast over me of what remains to you

And pride finds its fullness in the fully accomplished young man.

For boasting befits the perfect, accomplished man

وإذا تطاوَلَتِ الرجالُ بِفَضلِها

وإذا تطاوَلَتِ الرجالُ بِفَضلِها

فاربَع فإنكَ لَستَ بالمُتَطاوِلِ

فاربَع فإنكَ لَستَ بالمُتَطاوِلِ

And when men vie for eminence through their merit,

And if men exalt themselves by their merit

then hold back, for you are not one to rise above others.

Then sit, for you are not the exalter

أعطاكَ رُبُّك ما هويتَ وإنَّما

أعطاكَ رُبُّك ما هويتَ وإنَّما

تَلقى خِلافَ هَواك عند مَراجِلِ

تَلقى خِلافَ هَواك عند مَراجِلِ

Your Lord gave you what you desired, but only

Your Lord gave you what you desired

with Marajil do you encounter the opposite of your desire.

Yet you find contrary to your desire at death

تعلو المنابرَ كلَّ يَومٍ آملاً

تعلو المنابرَ كلَّ يَومٍ آملاً

ما لستَ من بعدي إليهِ بواصِلِ

ما لستَ من بعدي إليهِ بواصِلِ

You ascend the pulpits every day, hoping for

You ascend the pulpits every day hoping

what you will not attain after me.

What after me you cannot attain

فَتَعيبُ مَن يَعلو عَليكَ بِفَضلِهِ

فَتَعيبُ مَن يَعلو عَليكَ بِفَضلِهِ

وتُعيدُ في حقي مَقالَ الباطِلِ

وتُعيدُ في حقي مَقالَ الباطِلِ

So you disparage the one who rises above you through his merit,

So you blame whoever exalts over you by his merit

and repeat words of falsehood concerning me.

And repeat false speech against me
