O my eyes, will you not weep for my calamity?

And all people's eyes are more patient than mine.

O my eyes, give freely of abundant tears,

For my dread and what I feared have come true.

I wept for the loss of the noblest, who followed one another,

And faced death, armored and unarmored—

Among the noblest, the fair-faced men of the house of Hashim,

Theirs is a remembered past of shining glory.

Lamps like crescent moons, for they are

Most discerning in generosity or warding off adversity.

We were bereaved of them—calamities live up to their name—

By Tamim, Bakr, al-Sakun, and Himyar.

And Hamdan surged against us, and forces were mustered by

Hawazin, among the clans of Qays and A'sur.

And in every clan is a spatter of our blood,

At a lookout, rising above you and openly displayed.

    ولله قتلانا تدان وتنشر

    So our life is for God, as was our death;

And our slain are God's, to be judged and raised again.

All spilled blood has an avenger, and the avenger of our blood

Is at a lookout, rising above you and coming into view.

So our enemies will see, when we meet,

On which of the two sides the purified Prophet stands.
