جمحت أبا مسلم فأخنس

جمحت أبا مسلم فأخنس

وعدّ عن النظرِ الأشرس

You have run wild, Abu Muslim, so draw back;

I scolded Abu Muslim, so he fell silent

and desist from that savage glare.

And turned away his fierce gaze

ولا يغررنك ركوب الكميت

ولا يغررنك ركوب الكميت

وما تستجيد من الملبس

وما تستجيد من الملبس

And do not let riding the bay horse beguile you,

Do not be deceived by riding the camel litter

nor the clothing you deem fine.

Nor what you wear of fine clothes

فكم قد رأينا مطاعا هنا

فكم قد رأينا مطاعا هنا

ك صار المذلل في المجلس

ك صار المذلل في المجلس

For many a man have we seen obeyed there,

For how many have we seen honored here

who became the humiliated one in the assembly.

Who later sat disgraced in the assembly
