1. إذا جاء الثناء على فقير

    ولم يحتل له فيث الصيف زادا

    When praise comes to a poor man,

    And he has not managed to secure provisions for himself [in?] summer,

  2. ولم يحتل له ثوبين أيضا

    تردّ البرد عزما واجتهادا

    Nor managed to procure two garments for himself either,

    To ward off the cold with determination and effort,

  3. وأقلقه ارتعاد يوم قرّ

    فزاد الله رعدته ارتعادا

    And shivering on a bitterly cold day troubles him,

    Then may God add still more shivering to his trembling.
