سوى متشامت أو مستريب

We have been afflicted by an age in which there is

For long we've known none in our midst

None but a gloater at misfortune or a distrustful person,

Save those who gloat or harbor doubts,

وحاسد نعمة وصديق وقت

وحاسد نعمة وصديق وقت

إذا ما غبت ذمّك في المغيب

إذا ما غبت ذمّك في المغيب

And an envier of blessings, and a friend of the moment,

Who envy blessings, befriend for now,

Who, when you are away, disparages you in your absence.

Yet slander you when you're away.

فمن أولاك ودّا من صديق

فمن أولاك ودّا من صديق

ومن ذي قربة أو من غريب

ومن ذي قربة أو من غريب

So whoever offers you affection—whether a friend,

So whom should we befriend of those,

A kinsman, or a stranger—

Or strangers we scarcely know?

فحبّ خديعة لمكان رفق

فحبّ خديعة لمكان رفق

متى ما زال ذمّك من قريب

متى ما زال ذمّك من قريب

Offers deceitful love for the sake of some benefit;

For lofty love and noble grace

Whenever that benefit vanishes, he soon disparages you.

Vanish when slander lingers nigh.
