إلى من أشتكي همّي وغمّي

إلى من أشتكي همّي وغمّي

وما ألقاهُ من أهل العقول

وما ألقاهُ من أهل العقول

To whom shall I complain of my worry and grief,

To whom do I complain of my worries and sorrows

And of what I suffer from people of reason?

And what I face from people of intellect

إذا أخطوا أقاموا الحكم عذراً

إذا أخطوا أقاموا الحكم عذراً

وأوخذ بالخطيّة بالقليل

وأوخذ بالخطيّة بالقليل

When they err, they make judgment an excuse,

If they make mistakes, they provide excuses

Yet I am held to account for the slightest fault.

And I am blamed for the little sin

وما غيظي على الجهّال منهم

وما غيظي على الجهّال منهم

كما غيظي على أهل الأصول

كما غيظي على أهل الأصول

My anger at the ignorant among them is not

I am not as angry at the ignorant among them

Like my anger at those versed in fundamentals.

As I am angry at the people of principles

أرى متعاطيا للعلم يأتي

أرى متعاطيا للعلم يأتي

بتخليط وراي مستحيل

بتخليط وراي مستحيل

I see one who dabbles in learning come

I see a student of knowledge comes up

With muddle and an untenable opinion.

With a mixing and an impossible view

ويزعمُ أنّه في العلم باب

ويزعمُ أنّه في العلم باب

ويأتي مثل أخلاق الجهول

ويأتي مثل أخلاق الجهول

And he claims to be a gateway to learning,

And claims to be a gateway in knowledge

Yet he displays the manners of an ignorant man.

Yet acts like the ethics of the ignorant
