إلى الله أشكو غفلة في معاشر

إلى الله أشكو غفلة في معاشر

إلى نهية من صاحب ومجادل

إلى نهية من صاحب ومجادل

To God I complain of heedlessness among people,

To God I complain of the heedlessness of companions,

to its utmost limit, in companion and disputant alike.

To the end of one who is a comrade and disputant.

أخاطب قوما موضحا عن دلالة

أخاطب قوما موضحا عن دلالة

ببرهان حق ثابت غير آفل

ببرهان حق ثابت غير آفل

I address a people, elucidating evidence,

I address a people making clear the evidence

with a true, steadfast, unfading proof.

With proof of assured truth that does not fail.

فيستهجنوا قولي لنقص بصائر

فيستهجنوا قولي لنقص بصائر

ولو وفقوا ثاروا بتدقيق فاصل

ولو وفقوا ثاروا بتدقيق فاصل

So they disparage my words for lack of insight;

Yet they disdain my words due to a lack of insight,

had they been guided aright, they would have risen to decisive scrutiny.

And if they understood, they would rise to make fine distinctions.

عليّ لهم شرح البيان وما أرى

عليّ لهم شرح البيان وما أرى

عليّ لهم شرح العلوم الفواضل

عليّ لهم شرح العلوم الفواضل

I owe them a clear explanation, but I do not think

It is up to me to explain discourse to them, yet I see

I owe them an exposition of the noble sciences.

It is up to me to explain the noble sciences to them.
