Time has two states: gathering and parting.
Time has both gathered and parted me,
And death's decree cannot be forestalled.
And death has an unmatched decree,
وللجديدينand for the ever-new two (day and night) فيin ترديدthe repetition of كرهماtheir cycles
سعدgood fortune ونحسand ill fortune بتحقيقwith certainty وتوفيقand accord
And ever-renewed day and night, in their recurring cycles,
Yet the newcomers in their hate recite,
Bring good fortune and ill, with certainty and accord.
Blessing and curse with success and accord.
لاnot شيءa thing أعجبmore wondrous منthan حاليهماtheir two states وهماwhile they both
لاnot يبليانthey both wear out ويبلىand wears away كلevery مخلوقcreated being
Nothing is more wondrous than their two states, for they
Nothing is stranger than their two states,
Do not wear out, while every created being wears away.
They do not wear out, all creatures wear away,
للهto God ذليmy abasement ولاand not للناسto people فيin طليmy seeking (reading uncertain)
قوتيmy sustenance كذلّةlike the abasement of عشيقa lover لمعشوقbefore a beloved
My abasement is before God, not men, as I seek
My strength to them and not people's in my seeking,
My sustenance, like a lover's abasement before the beloved.
Is like a lover's to the one he loves.

Yet they are intent on denying me, despite my ardor
And they are honored in denying me my quest,
And my sound knowledge of all manner of tricks.
And my knowledge of the ways of stratagems.

I did not come to Baghdad opening,
The door to a livelihood, out of ignorance or folly.
The door of livelihood out of ignorance or halt,

Rather, the crookedness of both feet kept me from seeking
But the two feet's limp hindered me from my goal,
A means of livelihood by traveling west and east.
And the means of life with going far and coming near.

وللمفاليسand for the penniless دارan abode الذلhumiliation والضيقand distress
Baghdad is a pleasant abode for the wealthy,
Baghdad is a goodly abode for the wealthy,
And for the penniless, an abode of humiliation and distress.
And for the bankrupt, an abode of woe and strait.

I dwelt there, in the land of al-Khuld, in a home
I dwelt in it in the meadow of eternity,
Of the house of Sasan, among a band of beggars.
For the house of Persia, among vile Arabs.

During a time when the sky swore to us
In a time in which the sky swore to me,
That in that time we would never see the sun for certain.
That I should not see the sun clearly in it.

So the clouds, because of my ill luck and misery, swore
So the cloud swore from my letter and my trouble,
Not to relent in distressing and hindering me.
That it would not slacken from my grief and hindrance.

An abode of bliss—but its people have turned
The abode of bliss, but its people turned,
From learning to frivolity and clapping.
From knowledge to foolishness and handclapping.

I have ended up there, neglected among its dwellers,
I became despised among its inhabitants,
As though I were a copy of the Qur'an in a heretic's house.
As if I were a Koran in a heretic's house.
