رأوه في حالة الجنون فما

شكّوا بأن الجنون في خلده

They saw him in a state of madness, so they did not

doubt that madness was in his mind.

وأبصروا جسمه يذوب ضنى

فقيل سحر قد شاع في جسده

And they saw his body melting away with illness,

so it was said, "A spell has spread through his body."

قال الأطباء علّة سكنت

في قلبه وانثنت إلى كبده

The physicians said, "An ailment has settled

in his heart and turned toward his liver."

كم شربة قد سقي فما نفعت

بل زاد شرب الدواء في كمده

Many a draught he was given, yet none helped;

rather, drinking the medicine increased his grief.

وكم كتاب وعوذة عقدا

عليه حلا بها قوى أوده

And many a written spell and protective charm were tied

upon him, thereby sapping his strength.

فهو صريع لما به دنف

إن لم يمت في غد فبعد غده

So he lies stricken by his affliction, gravely ill;

if he does not die tomorrow, then the day after.
