وشرب وتتريف ولبس جليس
The world has not been made sweet by food and comfort,
And life has not grown sweet through food and comfort,
nor by drink, indulgence, clothing, or companionship.
and drink, indulgence, and a companion’s attire.

I sought a companion or a friend, but found none—
I sought a companion or a friend, but found no
no new one; nor did a well-worn one pass muster.
new one; nor did a worn one find favor with me.

Many a companion have I—may God set his dwelling far away—
And many a companion have I—may God keep his home far away—
base, lowly, low-born on both sides, contemptible.
ignoble, of lowly parentage, vile.

So here I am, my patience held captive by grief,
So here I am, my patience held captive to sorrow,
and the patience of a free and noble man worn threadbare.
and the patience of the freeborn, noble youth is threadbare.
