خذ من زمانك ما صفا

ومن الأحبّةِ ما عفا

Take from your days what is untroubled;

Take from your time what is pure

and from loved ones what comes freely.

And from loved ones what is forgiving

لا تسألنّ أخاك عمّا

في الضمير وما اختفا

في الضمير وما اختفا

Never ask your brother about what

Do not ask your brother about

is in his heart and what lies hidden.

What is in the conscience and hidden

وإذا جفا فألن له

وإذا جفا فألن له

منك الجناح إذا جفا

منك الجناح إذا جفا

And if he is harsh, soften for him

And if he is aloof then gentle

your wing, if he is harsh.

Your wing to him if he is aloof

دار الورى وامنحهمُ

دار الورى وامنحهمُ

محض المودّة والصفا

محض المودّة والصفا

Be tactful with people, and grant them

The home of all people and grant them

unalloyed affection and sincerity.

Pure affection and clarity

كن خيّرا لهمُ وإن

كن خيّرا لهمُ وإن

أولوك شرّا مسرفا

أولوك شرّا مسرفا

Be kind to them, even if

Be good to them even if

they inflict excessive harm upon you.

They are evil exceeding

كن حيث هم لا حيث أن

كن حيث هم لا حيث أن

ت وكن حكيما أحنفا

ت وكن حكيما أحنفا

Be where they are, not where you

are, and be wise like Ahnaf.

And be wise and gentle
