Sound thought and piety led me to discover

That safety lies between silence and fear.

And it told me, in the tongue of knowledge, out of self-respect,

That contentment is more fitting for me than greed.

And reason reminded me of what I do not deny

Of noble virtues, were it not for so much deceit.

Indeed, cultivating forbearance leads me to honor,

And recklessness leads to destitution and distress.

And experience spoke to me of the days:

That I should not dwell beside what draws one toward disgrace,

    والجار يملك حدّ الجار بالشفع

    For fear of disgrace amid suspicion dwelling beside me;

And a neighbor possesses his neighbor's boundary by pre-emption.

And God, through His aid, granted me a further gift

From His bounty, which kept my nature from servility.

I despaired of seeing a patron, and my eyes were opened

By my despair to the arrogance of walking with followers.

And I became like a wild beast that is content with little and does not

Turn toward fertile countryside, for fear of pain.
