1. يا درّة في الدهر صادفتها

    أحسن في الجيد من الطوق

    O pearl I chanced upon in the course of time,

    Fairer upon the neck than a necklace!

  2. اشتاقني عبدٌ على زعمه

    من سرّ من راى أيما شوق

    A slave longed for me—or so he claimed—

    From Surra Man Ra'a, with such great longing.

  3. فزارني في عكبرا ليلة

    واعتاقه من فكرة عوقي

    So he visited me in Ukbara one night,

    And my delay kept him from thinking,

  4. حتى إذا حصّل برّي له

    انقلب الشوق إلى فوق

    Until, once he had secured my kindness toward him,

    The longing turned to “above” (unclear in context).
