أبا جامحا أمسك عنانك مقصرا

أبا جامحا أمسك عنانك مقصرا

فإن مطايا الدهر تكبو ونعثر

فإن مطايا الدهر تكبو ونعثر

O Abu Jamih, hold your reins and restrain yourself.

Abu Jamha, restrain your pace though falling short,

For time’s mounts stumble, and we stumble too.

For the mounts of time stumble and falter.

ستقرع سنا أو تعضّ ندامة

ستقرع سنا أو تعضّ ندامة

يديك إذا خان الزمان وتقصر

يديك إذا خان الزمان وتقصر

You will gnash your teeth or, in remorse, bite

Old age will strike you or regret will bite

Your hands when time betrays you, and you will desist.

When time betrays you and you fall short.

ويلقاك رشد بعد غيك واعظ

ويلقاك رشد بعد غيك واعظ

ولكنّه يلقاك والأمر مدبر

ولكنّه يلقاك والأمر مدبر

And sound judgment will meet you after your waywardness, admonishing you;

Wisdom will find you after your madness, preaching,

But it will meet you when affairs are in decline.

But finds you when the matter is settled.
