هوّن عليك وإلا هان عن كره

هوّن عليك وإلا هان عن كره

ما ليس في كونه بد من القدر

ما ليس في كونه بد من القدر

Make it easier on yourself, or it will grow easier against your will—

Bear with ease, else hate will ease with time,

that which fate must inevitably bring to pass.

What being holds is fated to be so.

يرجو النجاة ريقٌ مبصرٌ لججا

يرجو النجاة ريقٌ مبصرٌ لججا

والنفس من منهج حق على خطر

والنفس من منهج حق على خطر

A drowning man [apparently intended], seeing deep waters, hopes for deliverance.

A seeing lip hopes for survival amid seas,

And the soul is in peril with regard to the path of truth.

The soul strays from the path of truth in danger.

أين الفرار لمن في البحر مركبه

أين الفرار لمن في البحر مركبه

في اللج وهو على يأس من الوزر

في اللج وهو على يأس من الوزر

Where is escape for one whose vessel is at sea,

Where can one flee whose ship is in the sea,

in the deep, while he despairs of refuge?

Struggling in the waves, burdened down with stones?

ما قدّر الله آت لا مرد له

ما قدّر الله آت لا مرد له

فالصبر عن كرم أولى من الخور

فالصبر عن كرم أولى من الخور

What God has decreed is coming; there is no turning it back.

What God ordains will come and cannot be undone;

So patience born of nobility is more fitting than faintheartedness.

Patience in fate shows nobler than despair.

وللمقادير أسباب مقدّرةٌ

وللمقادير أسباب مقدّرةٌ

بالريح والغيم يرجى وابل المطر

بالريح والغيم يرجى وابل المطر

And the decrees of fate have ordained causes:

To all decrees are causes foreordained-

Through wind and clouds, a downpour of rain is hoped for.

With clouds and wind rain's plenty is hoped for.
