كفى حزنا ما أرى حل بي

كفى حزنا ما أرى حل بي

من الضرّ في زمن كابت

من الضرّ في زمن كابت

It is sorrow enough to see what has befallen me:

Enough of sorrow - I see no hope for me

affliction in an oppressive age.

In times of hardship that suppress

أميّز من مسمعٍ منصت

أميّز من مسمعٍ منصت

ومعتبر وفم صامت

ومعتبر وفم صامت

I distinguish among an attentive ear,

I confide in a listening ear

one who takes heed, and a silent mouth.

Understanding, and a silent mouth

فإن ضاق صدري بكظم الأذى

فإن ضاق صدري بكظم الأذى

على مقبل منه أو فائت

على مقبل منه أو فائت

So if my breast grows tight from holding in the hurt,

If my heart is weary of bearing hurt

whether yet to come or already past,

From one who wrongs me or passes by

خرجت بسرّي إلى ماقتٍ

خرجت بسرّي إلى ماقتٍ

وأبديت ضرّي إلى شامت

وأبديت ضرّي إلى شامت

I take my secret to one who hates me,

I take my secret out to the hater

and reveal my suffering to one who gloats.

And reveal my pain to the gloating eye
